We watched it last night, I quite enjoyed it.
The scenes with the boys on bikes and in the girl's house
were funny as hell.
It's reminded me I should wear my DMs more too

A better episode last night.  The series is up to speed now.  Good to hear Buzzcocks' 'Fast Cars' during the party scene.

Yeah, last night's show was good. Couple of things that stood out to me that I think we could have done without. Firstly, was the over-use of the gag centring on the kid belonging to Perry Benson. The first instance was great, but I think it was a little much to keep going back over it.

Secondly, the party scene - was there really any need to pander to Channel Four's desire to make another SKINS-like show?

Minor gripe though. It's a brilliant show. Accordign to Shane Meadows, the third and fourth episodes (which he directed) are a lot darker in tone. I have a feeling we'll be seeing Stephen Graham's Combo again.

Also, for those outside of the UK who are desperate to see this, the DVD is due out on 11th October. It can be had for less that 12 quid on Amazon.

What stuck out like a sore thumb in last night's episode was the scene in the shop where they were talking about hiring out videos. For 50p. And saying "It's the future".

As Ian over at pre-cert pointed out...

It's supposed to be 1986 not 1980

Is there a reason for such slack research on the part of the writers?

Another OK episode, still not grabbing me to be honest. 1986 was the year I left school and discovered the wide world and it wasn't at all like the world in this programme.

In all fairness, I do think it was a deliberate “mistake” – i.e. it was implying that the guy who owned the shop knew fuck all, mate. Let’s be honest, I’m sure we’ve all come across people like that in our time, haven’t we? Trying to talk something up like they’re some kind of pioneer when everyone else has been up to the same thing for years!

If that was the case then fair play, went right over my head though!  :-*

It would certainly be lost on younger people that have only known DVDs!

The video boom began in 1979/1980, right? So six or seven years is a huge discrepancy, especially for someone of Meadows's age (b. 1972).

I got the impression the shopkeeper was meant to behind the times a bit, it looked like a joke to me.

Anyway, who's bothered about historical accuracy? It had Kelly in a bikini for god sake!

Meadows Publicity Machine? Get your own cusses, mate  :-\ That's one of mine and it's old  :P

Jokes aside, yes, I'm a massive fan of Meadows's work - to me, he's the only consistently interesting filmmaker making films in England at the moment. Yes, we have other great directors but most of them inevitably make the leap to Hollywood because it's easier to finance the types of films they want to make there. There's nothing wrong with that, by I do admire the way in which Meadows seems to know what he wants to do and he sticks to that, and in most cases (ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE MIDLANDS aside) it means he can do it without compromise.

Not watched it yet - if grim as in dark, how bad was it Jonny? I'm crying at far too much TV
these days. I've cried watching bastard Torchwood about 4 times as it is  ???
If it's uber-grim I'll have to pick a day I'm in an especially good mood.
