Pete Walker Discussion
« on: 03 Aug 2007 - 13:20 »

it would be a very boring world if we all liked and disliked the same things.
Pete Walker films for instance, i've only seen "Frightmare" and one other one. as "Frightmare" is supposedly his masterpiece and i thought it was shit i have no intention of watching his other movies!

I thought Frightmare was shite as well and can't understand why people call it his masterpiece, now House of Whipcord on the other hand is fantastic and deserves alot more praise.

Whipcord is easily his best film, although I do like Frightmare too. Imagine what the Sex Pistols film would have been like that he was going to make with Michael Armstrong!

I liked House of Whipcord - so much so I bought the Lobby card  ::) I also enjoyed House Of Mortal Sin. Frightmare was OK but I preferred these two over it.

I've been slowly catching up with Walker's films of late and have been impressed by several. Like Kev and Stephen, I would rate HOUSE OF WHIPCORD as best—it’s a brilliant film—very stark, very gritty and leaves a lot to the imagination. I also really liked THE HOUSE OF MORTAL SIN and FRIGHTMARE. The others that I have seen have been middling to slightly above average – THE COMEBACK, SCHITZO and HOME BEFORE MIDNIGHT. I’ve still got DIE SCREAMING MARIANNE, THE FLESH AND BLOOD SHOW and COOL IT CAROL to see.

Whatever you think of Walker’s films, you’ve got to hand it to him for making these films, as many of them really pushed the boundaries of what was permissible during the 70s.

I enjoy them all to some degree, Frightmare and Whipcord are probably my favourites, Cool It Carol is not at all what you'd expect it to be given it stars Robin Askwith, it's an almost British Realist picture or as near as Walker ever got to making one. The Flesh And Blood Show is Ten Little Indians all but by name IMO Would love to see Man Of Violence and some of his other early rareities, I have all that is currently available on disc and a few on VHS. As Comp said got to admire the bloke. And if you haven't read Steve Chibnall's book on him you should!   ::)

I've just finished reading the Chibnall book, mate - it's a great read. Puts the films into a historic context and is really quite honest too.

Nice one Comp! It's a refreshing read, in no way is Chibnall sicophantic about his subject, just honest as you say. Forgot to mention SCHIZO which although very flawed has on stand out scene for me , the seance scene! I had to flick it back first time I watched it because I wasn't sure what I'd seen!

I need to see SCHIZO again - I've not seen it in a couple of years.

I've not seen 'Schizo' for a very long time but I remember liking it when everyone else around me was slagging it big time, same went for 'The Comeback' which I also really liked...

Surely you've got the ABUK coffin set Jonny? Just been thinking and the last time I watched Frightmare was nearly two years ago, I put it on for the Mrs the night before our daughter was born  :-\ Well she was overdue and I thought a bit of cannibalistic brit horror might induce the birth. I was wrong BAtman Begins done it  :-\
