Unman, Wittering and Zigo (John Mackenzie, 1971)
« on: 17 Jan 2013 - 18:51 »

A corker of a film from John Mackenzie (THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY) and sad to see it unreleased on DVD or Blu-ray, did it have a UK VHS release at some point? Strangely the copy I watched was in English but featured a couple of instances where French subtitles appeared on screen to translate the films title and some signage in the film.

Extremely well made and acted and it certainly keeps you thinking right up to the very end, you're never quite sure if things are what they seem or if it's a twist in the tale.

Yes, you're right, I love this movie, it's one of my favourite. Tension is high till the end...David Hemmings took part in very interesting movies in that period, culminating in Deep Red.
How long does your English dubbed version run for? 97'27" circa?
I've got an old Italian TV recording running for 101', a bit longer than the English dubbed TV rip shared at that place (96'45"), I guess that it's mainly due to the long end credits.
Is Made by the same director good as well?

I've never heard of this one but it's certainly got my attention.

What's it about Jonny, without giving to much away?

It's about a guy (Hemmings) who gives up a career in advertising to be an English teacher. His first teaching job is at a boarding school where he replaces a teacher who has died (falls off a cliff before the opening credits). First day there his class tell him they murdered the guy he's replacing because he didn't follow their rules.

Did they really kill him or are they winding the new teacher up?

I've seen this, quite a few years ago (was it shown on UK television during the late 80s or early 90s?) and remember it vividly. It's very intense in places, isn't it?

I've found the new rip and have downloaded it; I'm eager to see it again.

Apparently, it's based on a radio play, and there was an earlier television dramatisation of the same play produced for the Beeb in 1965.

I remember seeing this on TV way back when.

Blimey, haven't seen this one for years. It was shown on late night TV in the 80s. I remember that the last three names in the class register are Unman, Wittering and Zigo, and there's a sex scene in which the camera crash-zooms in on the crutches of the couple!
