By the same turn I'd also suggest films that are crime/giallo hybrids should perhaps just go in the crime list, CALLING ALL POLICE CARS and RING OF DEATH for example.

I agree with that; although I'm really stringent on what is or isn't a giallo. I'd remove half the films out of the Luther Smith book.

This is something I've been thinking for a while. Should we really take what is in that book as 'gospel'? If truth be told Adrian never said all the films in his book were gialli, just that it's somehow beeen accepted over the years that they are.

Maybe it's time to set out a new, updated, list that just has films that fit our agenda as regards what a giallo is?

The problem being that I don't think any of us could agree on what a giallo is.

True. Maybe we should just crack on as is and have a 'Grey area' section at the bottom of the list?

With a caveat somewhere saying something like 'these films are often included in lists of gialli, but in our opinion they do not fit the criteria'. That way then you could list films like Hitch-Hike and stop people saying 'why haven't you listed xxxxxx?'.

Spot on. This is what we shall do.  :'(

When I said 'completeness' I meant including all the borderline titles but just didn't articulate it very well! What you've both said since sounds perfect.

I'm experiencing the same problem with Giallo fansub project - I'm using two books as a guide:

Luca Rea: I Colori del Buio: Cinema Thrilling Italiano 1930 to 1980 and Adrian Luther Smith's book (which I didn't even know I owned?!)

The problem is a lot of films blur the line - as Jonny points out with Eye in the Labyrinth (Psychological giallo perhaps?). The same for A Tutte Le Auto...Polizia (Calling all Cars) which I also agree is better placed in the Eurocrime genre. Both books list it as a 'Giallo'.

I'm curious to see how this list progresses - it would be good to see a more accurate list than the ones presented by either of those two books.

The advantage we have here is that we have two possible places to put borderline titles so at least they're covered; it's a privilege that Luther Smith wasn't afforded.

Re: Adrian Luther Smith's book - I agree, definitely. It's also incredibly thorough, listing a lot of really obscure titles - Far (far) more than the Italian book.

Especially when you consider when the book was written and information had to be accumulated via other means than the internet. The problem is that he wasn't selective with the titles (and I can't really blame him) and just threw everything into the pot.

Maybe of interest...  :D

Mikel Koven has this to say in his book La Dolce Morte on the giallo filone (free translation:movement):

"There are several different kinds of gialli....While the classical giallo features a serial killer clad in black gloves, hat, and overcoat being hunted by an amateur detective, the poliziotto puts the police investigation front and center in the investigation.
Other gialli tend to focus on more private and interior settings, creating more of a suspense giallo.
Still others, embracing the strong connection between the giallo and the horror film, offer a more supernatural narative, the giallo-fantastico.
What we mean by giallo, then is quite a broad spectrum of films, despite their formulaic narratives."

So I made this division:

Classical giallo (Blood and Black Lace,The Bird with the Chrystal Plumage,Who Saw Her Die?...)
Poliziotto giallo (Black Belly of the Tarantula,Death Occurred last Night,So Sweet,So Dead...)
Suspense giallo (The Sweet Body of Deborah,Orgasmo,Perversion Story...)
Giallo-fantastico (Suspiria,Inferno,Malocchio...)

I'll buy the first three sub-sections as being Gialli but not the 'Giallo-fantastico'.

Same here, also I'm not sure about Koven's authority as regards gialli in general. I don't have the book to hand but didn't he say he's only seen a handful of them?

A bit more than a handful, but he does state in the introduction that he hasn't seen STRIP NUDE FOR YOUR KILLER (for one) because he kept getting outbid on EBay. Hmmmm........
