Video Mania (Mario Degiovanni & Davide Pulici, 2005)

Written by Mario (Owner of Kult Video) and Davide (Nocturno Magazine and website founder) this little book is a treasure trove of information about the Home Video industry. Starting off with 9 pages cram packed with the history of Italian video companies starting with the cartoons and porn videos that were first released in 1978. A brief potted history of all the video companies like Videorama, Avo Program (later to become Avo Film), Cinehollywood, Techno Film etc is followed by 125 pages of VHS releases.

Each page features a single film and has a full colour repro of the cover, VHS info and small write up reproduced in English at the bottom of the page. One very interesting part is the price guide, one of the rarest tapes is the Saturno Video release of Giuliano Biagetti’s ‘Interrabang’ valued at 750 Euros and the writers only know of one existing copy of this VHS release!

Not a big book, it’s big enough to fit into a large coat pocket, ideal I guess for taking with you on video hunts on Italian flea markets! Price wise it’s OK, 20 Euros but you get 20% off if you order it via Kultvideo’s website, you can get bigger and more glossy books from FAB for the same money but considering the wealth of info on such a specialised subject I think the price is acceptable.

Looks like a great book, just ordered it!

I have a nice copy of INTERRABANG although I am not sure if its sourced from the exact edition that is in the book. There is an equally rare Greek VHS of Romolo Guerrieri's giallo THE DOUBLE on IVC label- first Greek video company ever. It is a letterboxed version (unlike the less rare one on VCI) sourced from a 35mm print. The only known copy belongs to Bill Barounis (aka deathland on eBay or Onar Films). There is a certain giallo collector who has been making offers for years but Bill still holds on to it!

You, Bill and Kordas should get together and put out a similar book but for rare Greek vids!  ::)

You know, I had this idea a few years ago! Don't know if the guys are willing to do it though! I mean they are very busy with the rest of the things they do. I would love to do that though.

Well, wait until you get the Italian book and see how simple it would be to put together.  :D :'(

Well as I continue to pick the bones of Xploited`s corpse, I picked this book up. As Jonny says, it`s a real fount of information on video releases. I anticipate hours of drooling over the lovely covers pictured. Very cool that there`s some english text too.

Just ordered it, thanks Jonny. BTW, I have an excellent dvd-r of INTERRABANG taken directly of the Italian Universal vhs, the credits are in scope format then goes full screen for the remainder of the film.An absolute corker of a film and the print is both colourful and crystal clear.

Is Interrabang rare or something? I've got an Italian pre-record on the Universal label.

The Universal one is rare but not so rare. ( value 70 - 100 eur maybe less nowadays )
The Saturno is one of the top rarest ever. And if I remember well it's a fifferent master than Universal Video. It should be widescreen for all the time not just the opening credits.
