The Deadly Strangers (Sidney Hayers, 1974)
« on: 07 Aug 2007 - 23:19 »

Having been on a bit of a retro tip of late, I’m finding it increasingly harder to watch newer films. So tonight, I settled back and watched Sidney Hayers’ DEADLY STRANGRS, starring Hayley Mills, Simon Ward and Sterling Hayden.

Now, I thought Hayers’ ASSAULT was very mediocre, but was really impressed by REVENGE. I tracked down an original US VHS tape on eBay, since the film was never released here in the UK, and it wasn’t particularly cheap. Suffice to say, I was expecting to be impressed.

Now, I really do not wish to spoil the film for those that haven’t seen it, but I will say that I thought I had it all worked out for a while, was expecting it to be really predictable but ended up pleasantly surprised. I really hope that someone decides to put this little gem out on DVD sometime soon – the NTSC tape on the Paragon Video Productions label is of iffy quality and some of the more violent scenes appear to be cut.

It's a really enjoyable film, not least because you get to see Hayley Mills' modest baps...

Still think REVENGE is Hayers' best though.

Some frames are MIA in one of Mills nude scenes but I never noticed any cuts to violent material.  Shame this hasn't had a decent issue yet.

I'm working on a composite edit using the cut American Paragon tape and the Spanish language DVD. Watch this space!  :D

I know you have been busy of late, but did you ever get around to that comp version Marc?

Marc, can you tell me what is missing from the US tape ( or what's on the Spanish print not seen on the Paragon tape? ).

An excellent British thriller.  I remember watching this on a Saturday night in the early 80s on ITV.  I always wondered if it was this TV recording which has been doing the rounds on the bootleg circuit.
