Author Topic: Perverse Titillation: The Exploitation Cinema of Italy, Spain and France (2011)  (Read 8494 times)

This newish McFarland volume on Euro exploitation cinema by Danny Shipka must have snuck in under the radar, as I'd never heard of it until five minutes ago.  It looks potentially worthwhile though and the 'Search Inside the Book' feature on Amazon makes it look like a fairly detailed study.

"The exploitation film industry of Italy, Spain and France during the height of its popularity from 1960 to 1980 is the focus of this entertaining history. With subject matter running the gamut from Italian zombies to Spanish werewolves to French lesbian vampires, the shocking and profoundly entertaining motion pictures of the "Eurocult" genre are discussed from the standpoint of the films and the filmmakers, including such internationally celebrated auteurs as Mario Bava, Jess Franco, Jean Rollin and Paul Naschy. The Eurocult phenomenon is also examined in relation to the influences that European culture and environment have had on the world of exploitation cinema. The author's insight and expertise contribute to a greater understanding of what made these films special--and why they have remained so popular to later generations."

Or via the 'look inside' facility on Amazon that Anthony mentioned in his initial post.  :-\

Can you read the first 38 pages on Amazon? I've not looked.

Saying that, Google seem to miss out random pages in the group they show too.

You can read it all on Amazon - but I think it cuts you off after a certain number of pages have been viewed; but you can read it all in shifts.

Hi folks, thanks so much for the interest in the book! I had a blast putting it together as it was definitely a culmination of my love of Eurocult. It started out as my dissertation and I have since completely rewrote/rearranged it for the general public. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out (except the price which..yikes.. I had no control over.) as a good jumping off point to those not all that familiar with the genre. The missing pages on Amazon are actually the Eurocult posters (I have about 100 in the book)of the films because many times the posters were just as cool as the films. Again, with the thanks and I'd love to know what you all think of it! D

Danny's original dissertation is available to download here.

Has anyone picked the book up yet? I should be getting it in the new year when I finally get my payrise and backpay (eight months on and counting - the phrase 'useless cunt' doesn't even begin to describe the muppet in charge of our division).

Did you try any other publishers apart from McFarland? They are always dear.

Actually, they came to me with interest and I certainly don't mean to disparage them at all. They were a dream to work with! I was just thinking about the consumer. It's a big book and I think worth it but I would have preferred a smaller price (regardless of royalties) to get into more consumer hands. D

Such an occasion to express my gratitude and send 1000 thanx to Daniel Shipka !
I've remembered some scary, genuine italian horros, some with zombies, some with crazy murderers - always way different than usual anglo-saxon stuff. Another kind of storytelling, acting, different music.
They were pale remembrances in my mind.
Later on I've found and bought "Immortal Tales" book. OK - bot much to much about sex, less to less about horror. But, searching materials I've met Your "PERVRSE TITILLATION" dissertation.
And it was IT ! Amazing, wonderful work. I've read it, and read it, and one more time, read it ! I've almost learned some fragments. My knowlegde of Euro-Cult movies was organised, I was able to start search through ebay and Diabolikdvd stores, and, finally, got (almost) all the movies You've mentioned in Your fantastic work.
It's extremely reader friendly written, well organised, well executed - flawless.
And right now except thanking You -  I'm ready to buy officially edited form of this fantastic work.
It was so wonderful - that w/out any objections, "neverminding" price (rather high as for me in Poland) I've bought Your book in amazon store, and I'm waiting im-patiently for delivery.
Thank You one more time !!!!

I'm very tempted by this book. From the few places that I have found reviews they have been mostly positive.. But I just ordered the Blood & Black Lace book so the price of 50$ is pretty much. Recommendations would be highly appreciated.
