Initial reports indicate Hammer added digital effects to replace the spider and angel of death ( plus some other little bits ).  They are not including the original version either.
I have yet to pick any of these ( waiting for the rumoured but may never happen R1 release ) and am at a loss to understand why Hammer would do this ( except to assume the peopele running things are NOT fans and this is a purely profit driven affair).

Should have had the choice of both. There's nothing wrong with a little tampering years later by the film makers (and including the original version so as to not re-write history), but this smacks of contemptable vandalism!

I know it doesn't sound good. Jonathon Rigby stated on the b.h.forum that they are vary subtle, so i will reserve judgement till i have actually seen it, but i dont like the sound of it at all. The decent thing to do would be to include the untouched original version also.

'TDRO' is probably my favourite hammer (along side 'quatermass and the pit') and the effects are not great tbh, but it's all part of the charm, and there are ropey effects in a lot of the hammer films so....

If the new release does involve such tinkering then that is a diabolical state of affairs. I despise it when films are altered 'after the fact' to include different visual effects or what have you. The Devil Rides Out is one of the great Hammer films as well.

Quite well done IMO. Chris Lee aways used to complain about how poor they looked and said they could be made to look better with modern tech - he got his wish.

Must say, they have been done with great picture integrity. Hope the extras feature the original scenes, just for historical purposes.

To be honest I couldn't care less whether they improve the fim or not, what angers me, and everybody else I can imagine, is that they didn't include the original on the blu ray. People should have a choice no?

I cancelled my pre order and definately wont purchase this

It would certainly have saved all the grief. I'm not a fan of the 'bathed in blue light' entrance. I like it coming from nowhere into the dark room. Nothing wrong with that at all. I probably doubt Fisher would have been after that effect either. As I said in the other thread, the only problem I've ever had with the Angel of Death sequence is the looping which makes the horse look like it's doing some silly dance.

I'm sure if these revisions hadn't been done, any fan of the film wouldn't give a toss and I also doubt that they'll bring a new legion of fans.

I just watched FRANKENSTEIN on BD with all it's creases and folds in the backdrops plainly evident and it didn't matter one bit to me.

Thats what is slightly confusing,that they are quite happy to put two different versions of both 'frankenstein' and 'rasputin' on the br's but then didn't here, they must have expected at least some dissaproval with this version being the only option.

As i said they can do as much or as little as they want in terms of messing about just as long as they inc an unedited version on the disc.

Sorry if i am coming across like a troll or something it's just this is one of my favourite films and i am bitterly dissapointed

Always a bit worrying when someone says the DVD version looks a little sharper. Framing of the 1.66:1 version looks a bit shit too. Saw a screenshot comparison between this and the old Warner 1.85:1 DVD and that had more headroom whereas this looks like there's too much at the bottom.

Oh definately.Hammer is my primary interest,over and above cinema from mainland europe. I have pre ordered them all and will continue to do so,but not 'tdro' i'm afraid.

I will say one thing though,it's amazing how varied peoples thoughts are when it comes to reviewing blu rays.Having just read that review of 'curse...' I was pleased to see the reviewer go on about how fantastic the 'quatermass and the pit' blu ray was, I have said from the minute i first watched the disc until now that it is the most pristine looking hd transfer of a catalogue title in my collection(roughly 200 br's),but countless times I have seen people online complain that it's problematic

I'll be leaving judgment of blurays to my own eyes. I've yet to get a player or an hd telly but I've read so much bullshit that I don't trust anyone. One of my main bugbears is this talk of grain and the presence of it being 'natural' for film prints. In my fifteen years experience as a 35mm projectionist I can't recall seeing a grainy print on a cinema screen, even with archive prints.
