Not a big fan of this.  A couple good scenes for sure but the direction is mostly poor ( especialy the scenes with the director in them ! ).  Charles B. Pierce is a hack who never made a completely sucessful film ( some were popular but not good per se )   Here he gives himself a supporting role and he is simply awful.  As this is based on a true story, I'd guess the good parts come from the real events themselves.  The ending fails to deliver taboot.
Of course Ben Johnson is solid and he escapes with dignity.  Not so sure about Dawn Welles and Andrew Prine though.  I saw this when released and even as a teen I was let down, but the film does have it's fans.
I think it's long unavailable status helped it's reputaton and helps explain the hype around this release.  THE EVICTORS is another Pierce film that is included as a bonus on this release, and it's the better film.

I wonder how it weighs up to the German disc?

The German disc is shite. It would take very little to improve on it.

It's 4x3 and could possibly be a VHS upscale. Easily the worst Blu-Ray I have seen. Some of the German Blu-Rays are hit and miss. I got stung by the Nighthawks Blu-Ray. My HD recording off of ITV4 looks miles better.

Yeah Shout Factory discs are locked.

Each to their own on the covers I suppose, some are alright but quite a few remind me of Arrow monstrosities.

They are all double sided. Have a look on their Facebook page to see what they look like using the original artwork /poster.

I personally think some of Arrow's covers are fine. With the reversible sleeves and multiple covers, i usually find there's something for everyone. I liked the Zombie Flesh four sided covers they did on the ltd edition slipbox. The original VHS cover with the hand coming out of the ground and having the "strong uncut version" was a nice touch i thought.
