They explain about why in the extras, it seems to be part of the restoration and is seamless, to be honest it makes it better. If folks didn't mention it before I would never have noticed.  :P

I've not seen it for a good 8-10 years or so. How much is actually changed?

Not that much as far as I can remember. They digitally cleaned it up and improved the original effects with digital touches. When the horseman comes in they cleaned it so it didn't look so "stuck on" etc.
