French Dressing (Ken Russell, 1964)
« on: 24 Jan 2013 - 18:45 »

Harmless bit of fun from Ken Russell in his first feature film. James Booth stars as Jim who blags the local mayor into hosting continental film festival in town on the proviso he gets French film starlet Fran├žoise Fayol (Marisa Mell) to come over to host it.

Russell shows some imagination here with the use of sped up film and flights of fancy - a Thames paddle steamer is used as a cross channel ferry - all of which keep this from being tedious.

A real shame the transfer I watched wasn't all in 'scope!

I was only reading about this in the Offbeat book a couple of days ago (I've only got to mid 60's so far). I was surprised to see Marisa Mell was in it.

She's pretty good in it and it's a change to hear her real voice too!

1994 - Bravo
1999 - Ch4
2000 - Ch4
