I have read somewhere (probably on this board) that most of the german hartbox releases of italian genre films are bootlegs. Anybody know if this is true? Many obscure films from companies like X Rated or '84 feel rather shoddy, often with VHS sourced transfers etc, so I can certainly see that being the case. However companies like NEW and Eyecatcher have a few releases that feel more legit, for instance Rome Armed to the Teeth, Beatrice Cenci and The Bloodstained Butterfly. But maybe these are just rips from italian released DVDs with added english and german language options? Does anybody know for sure? And if they are indeed bootlegs, does Germany have the same copyright laws as the rest of Europe or is it okay to release all these unlicensed films? There seems to be so many german companies specialising in this kind of releases that it just feels odd that they don't get shut down by the rights holder's lawyers.

OFDB is best (for me) for checking whether a German release is a boot or not.

Type the name of the film you want to check in the search field and when it displays the results, if a DVD is a bootleg it will state it in brackets beside the title.

Apparently, the X-Rated hardboxes of EYEBALL and VEIL OF BLOOD are straight ports of the Laser Paradise editions, but I don't know if that means they are not legit or if the company couldn't be bothered to do a new encoding and authoring job.

Okay, thanks for the info Luca. If this site is indeed correct then all of my hartboxes seem to be licensed. Maybe the reason some of these hardboxes are of such a low quality A/V wise is because the DVD companies just use whatever old analogue transfers are supplied to them from the rights holders, without deeming it financially viable to make new ones (in those cases where good film elements even exist in the first place). The lack of relevant copyright info on most of these boxes is somewhat puzzling though.

Didn't the infamous Bill of Code Red claim that a german company had stolen his transfer for some film?

Wasn't Code Red annoyed about Nightmare in a Damaged Brain being released in Germany? Turns out that the German release didn't have English so may be legit after all.  I don't think CR is very clued up about the rights they have agreed.
