Just compared the old UK HBL version with the Japanese SONY Exciting version.

Ostensibly these are the same except for in two sequences: The SE version has more "writhing" footage in the big orgy sequence in the middle of the film, whereas the HBL version features extended green vomiting in the exorcism.

The SE version is letterboxed, but has washed out colours and way too dark, with all the pixilization, floating white blobs and forced subtitles you'd expect from Japan. The HBL version is pan and scanned, has much better colours, but a shade too bright for my liking...

Edit : I can put up the exact times of where this footage occurs if that helps with the project.

There are two more UK releases which run around 5 mins shorter. Not sure if these are cut versions or alternative edits. I'll see if I can hold of one of them.

There's a day for night scene that's really dark where Peter/Piero follows a female figure through the winding alleys and streets. If you or anyone else gets time to confirm, I'd quite like to know if this scene is brighter in any other print. The contrast is a bit too dark in the Japanese print (which is otherwise perfectly fine for me)

update after my full house rewire, still unboxing... but online at least

a good mate sent me a dvdr of the  french tape, it's the canadian release in ntsc format so any composite with the jap tape is going to that much easier.  canadian version is french audio only so it will need redubbing. dvdr is much better than what i had before.

Full intention now is:

french video souce with added scenes from the jap vhs in ntsc format, french audio version has no hardcoded subtitles or optical censorship

looking at triple audio with the English subtitles that Djangli made.

The title has little to do with the plot, in fact it is a re-telling of Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Black Cat" with a Giallo touch (gore, lesbian sex, nudity,suspense, traveling).

Luigi Pistilli stars as an abusive and psychotic husband constantly tormenting his wife and having incestous thoughts of his dead mother. A lover of Pistilli's is brutally murdered and the authorities want to pin the homicide on him, things get interesting when his neice (played by Edwige Fenech) comes to visit and the bodies begin to pile up in Pistilli's own household!!! The totally innocent (as far as the murders go) Pistilli must now hide the bodies in a wall in his wine cellar.

Not at all impressive but entertaining Giallo flick.

Sergio Martino often complained that he stood in the shadow of Dario Argento when it came to Giallo, I can see why this is. Martino's Giallo's are not as fun or inventive as Argento's.


A fun film for the month of october, next I'll be watching Emilio Miraglia's "The red queen kills seven times" (La dama rossa uccide sette volte) and I'll report back on it. In the mean time discuss this one if you have seen it.

Did anything ever come of this project?

In the absence of anything else, I picked up the current cheap US DVD under the title The Possessor, but it's little better than I remember the old UK Exorcist III VHS being.

I have a weird fetish for these catchpenny pasta possession pics like this one and L'Ossessa. I'd love to see a label like Shameless, 88 Films or Arrow take an interest in them.
