Life for Pat Kramer is comparatively serene until the night she goes to kiss husband Vance. Her bracelet falls off for no immediately apparent reason. Suddenly her bathrobe is two sizes too large. An unusually low tolerance for the poisons contained in hair sprays, floor waxes, feminine deodorants, junk food, space-age glues and paints, water softeners, vitamin supplements, food preservatives, artificial colourings and flavourings, plastic wrappings, nondairy creamers and air fresheners means Pat must face the awful fact that she is, day by day, growing smaller at a rapid rate.
