Okay, it's been one fuck of a day - the guy at the lab has been trying every trick under the sun to say he was right, blindly ignoring the fact (that I keep repeating to him) that he never at any point told me the telecines would be either all blue (Le Salamandre) or pink (Tutto Sul Rosso) - even going as far as to get his mate at the lab to pretend to be his father... seriously.

Realising that I have much better things to to do with my time we went on a two hour round trip drive to Rome to get the money from our mutual friend - the money is now here. As a token gesture of kindness (although why the fuck I'm being kind to him I'm still not sure...) we left 200 euros to cover what little work he put into the transfer, the plastic boxes and washing the reels (although I suspect he didn't even clean Le Salamandre completely) Either way, the money is safe and we need to move forward. I'm going to call up about the second lab tomorrow and the plan is to take 1 reel from each and have them evaluated.

As always, I'll keep everyone updated as the news comes in.

Well, it's certainly keeping me on my toes! I was upset when I finally saw the transfers, but things are okay now - at the end of the day the lab did do a wonderful job with 'Due Occhi Per Uccidere' - just for that alone, I'm happy with the way things have gone, even if it went south at the end.

Good news, in the meanwhile I've been contacted by someone who has offered to help - I'll be sending a test reel from 'Tutto Sui Rosso' tomorrow to test the waters. This could be good...

Thought it best to keep everyone updated on this...

The reel hasn't been sent - I'm now (finally!) going to get that done tomorrow morning... Just been really busy lately... Then we'll wait and see what the results are.

Flicking through 'Tutto Sul Rosso' I'm still convinced there's some decent colour in there so - if this goes well, and I'm right - we can ask them to have a look at 'Le Salamandre'. It's a tough call here because until we get a second opinion we don't know if the colours really are faded (beyond repair) or not. I'll post as soon as I get feedback from the test reel I'm sending.

Something interesting I noticed just now, comparing the two existing copies of 'Tutto Sul Rosso' - notice just how much information has been cropped from the sides of the TV cap, it's quite a chunk missing.

Having calmed down a bit from the initial shock, I think it's probably best to hand over another 200 euros for the original telecines - not for the transfers, but the actual work they did cleaning the reels and fixing the splices. They did do a good job there, to be fair.

This leaves 400 from the fund for postage for the reels and other options down the line.

I'm not giving up until I'm 100% sure we have the best transfers possible...

Just to confirm (and after a long delay!) the test reel from 'Tutto Sul Rosso' has been sent to Germany this morning. It should arrive within a week (or so).

I'll update when we get some feedback.

Will I be able to get a copy of the films though? I don't know how I missed this thread. :(

The first telecines didn't quite come out as expected - I'm assuming no colour correction was done to the reels leaving them all pretty much one colour. A test reel from 'Tutto Sul Rosso' (All On The Red) has been sent to a second lab in Germany for a second opinion.

We're playing the waiting game again.

Eventually the copies will be available to everyone, just like the previous telecine transfer (Due Occhi Per Uccidere) earlier in the year.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have colour.  :P

Note that the clip I've been sent is very low-res, this was a test to see how well the colour could be restored.

What can I say? Fortune seems to have smiled on us here - the offer of a second telecine at another lab has worked out great - and proves the guy at the lab in Italy was bullshitting me when he said the colour simply wasn't there (deterioration) - He just couldn't be bothered to actually do the colour restoration as I suspected from the start.

So, with everyone's blessing I'd like to send the rest of the reels to the lab and the remaining cash (about 500 euros once postage is out of the way) to this new lab.

I'm eternally grateful to a friend over at CG for doing all this - if there's any thanks or praise here, it's all his. Thank you!

I'm off camping with the wife tomorrow - I'll be back on Sunday/Monday and over the next few weeks start work on getting the materials sent out.

As always, any updates will be posted here as I get them.

Almost forgot... I dug myself out of fansub retirement and I'll be posting English subs for 'Yellow - Le Cugine' some time next week. Something for everyone to pass the time while we wait this out... It's still going to take a while with the telecines before it's all done and dusted.

Friends, Romans, Captain Findus...

Just had details back from our dude negotiating with laboratory number 2 - It was originally offered for free but, as I said in a post above, I figured it's only fair that all the money raised (minus the 200 to lab 1) should go to the new lab - as they're doing the work.

So, the two contacts have been chatting and it's been mutually agreed that 700 euros will cover both transfers. I'll cover the difference and postage costs, etc - so there's no need for anyone to donate anything more.

To be fair, the original quote was 500 euros SD and 2500 euros HD - so we are still, just like before, getting an incredibly good deal here. It was explained to the guy at the lab that this is a fan project, funded by fans - for fans - and this is why we've been given the deal.

Hats off to our friend for negotiating all this - as you've all probably figured out by now, it's quite a rollercoaster coordinating something like this. We really owe both our contact and the guy at the lab - both of whom are following this thread - so thanks guys, from me on behalf of everyone here.

One more thing - Whilst I did suspect that 'Tutto Sul Rosso' was in far better shape than I was lead to believe, I'm still worried that 'Le Salamandre' may not fare so well. I'll be sending up a test reel to know for sure but, if I'm right, then we could opt to telecine the giallo 'Giochi Erotici di una Famiglia per Bene' instead - we're still missing a decent Italian language copy, and this could be the solution. We'll find out after we get the feedback from the test reel...

I'll be posting the rest of 'Tutto Sul Rosso' this week - we'll be working on this one film at a time.

Over unt out.
