Il commissario Montalbano (TV series)
« on: 17 Aug 2020 - 21:16 »

Out of curiosity, but does anyone else watch the Italian TV series Il commissario Montalbano (Inspector Montalbano, as it's know in English)?

For those unfamiliar with the series, it started back in the late 90's, and its feature length episodes are based on a series of books by Italian writer Andrea Camilleri.

It's a very accessible show, that combines police work/mystery plots, some humour, a very likeable cast, and in true Italian fashion, some lovely locations and even lovelier women.  :D

Fans of Italian genre cinema may occasionally find some elements that may seem straight out of a giallo, although again, the series is very accessible, so it doesn't feature very graphic violence (but it does feature the occasional nudity).

Despite that, it's a very enjoyable show. Well shot, lovely locations, good acting, and the length of the episodes (some reaching almost 2 hours) allows for the stories to develop in a leisurely pace that I find very "comforting".

Very highly regarded here in Italy - and yes, I'd say it's firmly in what Italians what call the giallo genre (i.e. each episode is a mystery to be resolved)

Don't think I've seen a single episode in its entirety but my mum and aunt are big fans and watch it when it's on  ;)

I believe it's been subtitled and has aired on UK television in the past.

Fun fact: Lead actor Luca Zingaretti's brother, Nicola Zingaretti, is a very high-profile politician and secretary of the left-wing Democratic party. I'm guessing their parents must be quite proud of their kids :)

By sheer coincidence I came across a UK DVD of this just last week - I'd not heard of it before that.

In case anyone is interested, the series has received its first Blu-Ray release in Italy, with English subtitles.
This first set has the first 4 episodes (seasons 1 and 2), which have been recently remastered in 4k.
