Track 29 (Nicholas Roeg, 1988)
« on: 24 Aug 2007 - 10:39 »

Anyone else a fan of this lesser-known Roeg? I’d never seen the film before and was instantly taken by it. It’s a wonderful piece, marred only by Theresa Russell’s horrendous Southern drawl – shame because she puts in an excellent, layered performance. Gary Oldman impresses, as do Christopher Lloyd and Sandra Bernard. I really cannot recommend this film high enough, but can say little else without ruining the element of surprise.

The film is presented fullscreen, which is a shame, but the presentation is fair for a film of it’s age and the framing doesn’t detract from the enjoyment. Sound is presented in 2.0 and 5.1. I opted for the latter. There’s not much going on in the mix, but it’s loud and does a good job of presenting the score and sounds of model trains!

For £6, you really can’t go wrong. This is a must for all Roeg fans, IMO.

I really enjoy Gary Oldman's wildly pitched performance in this: "Mommy!"

No, not unless there are English for the hearing impaired, or something. Anchor Bay UK don't tend to put any foreign subs on there discs.

Great fun!

I picked this up Anchor Bay PAL DVD a few months ago to replace my VHS tape.

The performance are great and the subject matter surreal, but hey, it's Nic Roeg with a Dennis Potter script.

I'd rank it up there  ;) with Roeg's other great films PERFORMANCE (with Donald Cammell), WALKABOUT, DON'T LOOK NOW and THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH.
