It's great, isn't it - the use of classical music throughout the film is inspired, but had been done the year before in Michele Lupo's WEEKEND MURDERS. The screen grabs from the Italian prink look better than the Spanish one, though I'm quite happy with my copy.

Just watched the German DVD last night - I originally watched the Demented fansub/dub a few months ago - and what a great film.   

The ending is just fuckin' incredible, operatic and tragic [spoiler]watching Giorgio (Helmut Berger) flashback to happier times with Françoise (walking down the street, making love) while & after he kills Alessandro, especially when the earlier trippier flashback of Giorgio & Françoise walking down the street together, interspersed with Giorgio later walking the same street alone, seems at the time, to be the insane, schizophrenic memories of a psychopathic lunatic, not, in retrospect, the sad, haunted memories of a wandering lost soul.[/spoiler] Brilliant stuff! 

 Gianni Ferrio's score, which moves effortlessly back and forth from the Classical cues to the hep, jazzier lounge stylings is also great  and adds as much atmosphere and oomph to Tessari's film as any Morricone or Goblin score does to an early Argento film.  It's included as an extra on the German DVD, and I believe has the same cues as the excellent Easy Tempo OST.

Just noticed that a Dutch eBay seller is now stocking both covers at £14.99 each plus shipping (£2.89 to the UK).  A search for "Bloodstained Butterfly DVD" will find them.  This is not particularly cheap but an alternative to D&T and Chainsaw video.  Another German seller on eBay wanted to sell me a copy for over 30EURO.

I really enjoyed this one.  Sometimes a Giallo can spend a bit too much time on the mechanics of solving the crime, resulting in it being a bit 'slow'. However, this one does it brilliantly, via the flashbacks, solving of the crime and the coming together of the plot. Wonderful direction too and a terrific soundtrack.

I originally had the Spanish disc, but this new German release is stunning.

I absolutely love this movie and I can't see why most of the reviews I've read elsewhere are negative.
It certainly is different than your usual giallo with loads of gruesome deaths, the 'hero' who solves the case, etc.
It somehow reminds me of another Duccio Tessari's flick
[spoiler]La morte risale a ieri sera, where the father of the killed girl wants to make justice on his own[/spoiler]

As someone already said, I too started feeling, at one point that

[spoiler]Giorgio was responsible for ALL three deaths and couldn't figure out what actually happened until the very first minutes[/spoiler]

Beside the plot and the court scenes, I loved pretty much everything in this movie: the music, the locations, the choice of the actors, the direction and photography in the scene where the first victim is found in the park.

Out of curiosity, it's the skull in the locandina taken from a famous painting or something like that? I'm sure I've seen it somewhere else and only today I've realised it's NOT a skull.

Is it the Castellari's movie with Fabio Testi? Watched it recently, I could have seen the 'skull' while reading about it, then...uhm.

Yeah, I first noticed it on the locandina for Heroin Busters which kind of looks thrown together at the last minute anyway.  But this is the same skull as well:

I hope Herr Spanic doesn't mind me passing on some information on the forthcoming German disc. I am simply too excited about this release.

Anyone know what the score is with the Camera Obscura release of this? I would rather buy the CO release than Arrow and have been holding out but not heard anything since the CO artwork was revealed?
