C'etait Un Rendez-Vous (Claude Lelouch, 1976)
« on: 24 Aug 2007 - 11:02 »

Legend has it, that director Lelouch mounted a camera on his Ferrari and enlisted a Formula One drive to take the car through the streets of Paris, early on a Sunday morning. Suffice to say, the film (which is almost 9 mins in length) was shot in one take and although the driver does slow down at certain points, doesn't stop until the end - running red lights and narrowly avoiding other cars. It's rumoured Lelouch was arrested after the film's first public screening.

I had heard of Rendez-Vous, but had never seen it. It garnered somewhat of a cult following among car enthusiasts, who would screen nth generation prints at their "clubs." Back in 2003, a company based in the UK called Spirit Level films acquired the film and did a remaster.

I must admit, although it is very brief, it is an incredible film. Well worth checking out, if you have the chance.

On a similar note, has anyone else seen the shorts commissioned by BMW? Clive Owen plays a driver in each and they're all directed by a big name filmmaker - including Wong Kar-Wai, Ang Lee, David Fincher and Guy Ritchie.

There's 8 in total and all are worth watching but of particular note are John Frankenheimer's 'Ambush' featuring Tomas Milian as a gangster being stalked by a helicopter and 'Beat The Devil', directed by Tony Scott is the best of the bunch. It's stars Gary Oldman and James Brown, who's mumbles are so hard to distinguish, he's subtitled. Absolute genius.

Talking of Lelouch, I have his 1970 crime film THE CROOK [Original title: LE VOYOU] starring Jean-Louis Trintignant, but haven't watched it yet. Anyone seen it?

I saw this a long time ago. My friend is into fast cars and sent me the link.

No joke, but he drives past the first apartment I had in Paris! Maybe 100 metres from it. ;)

My uncle a car enthusiast has been on about this for years, only saw it on youtube a few months ago, it's amazing stuff. Although they now reckon it wasn't a ferrari but a Merc and that the sound was dubbed on later.

I love frankenheimers films.Has anybody seen mgms new dvd of 52 pick up? this is really a sleazy film noirish story with Roy Scheider being blackmailed by three pornographers. This is a guilty pleasure in the truest sense of the word.Ann margret and Kelly Preston costar and theres plenty of nudity, graophic violence, good dialogue, the kind you remember after you leave the theater, and good la locales. This one is not to be missed.

Lelouch recently said that he was the driver of the car. He also said that he did the same route with a Ferrari in order to record the audio of the engine and to use it for "dubbing" the other one. Looks like the audio that we hear in the short isn't synchronized...

Crazy stuff...
