Tony Arzenta (Duccio Tessari, 1973)
« on: 06 Oct 2007 - 22:42 »

I was really surprised to find that there was no thread already devoted to this classic Polizi.  I saw TONY ARZENTA for the first time a few weeks ago and found it to be one of the best Euro-Crime films I have seen so far.  Not only does Alain Delon ooze cool from every orifice he is very convincing in the title role.  The action set pieces are well executed, a barbed-wire strangling and flying stabbing are particularly nasty.  The ending certainly caught me off guard.

This is the third Tessari film I have seen, the others being BLOODSTAINED BUTTERFLY and PUZZLE, and I have come to the conclusion that Tessari is one of the most overlooked directors in Euro-Cult cinema.

Shameful isn't it!? Great that you've brought it up though as it's a brilliant film one of my favourite films featuring Alain Delon.

I hope I don't sound like a pedantic wanker but Polizi isn't the correct term for these films. The Italian Police are known as Polizia. Italian's refer to these films as 'Poliziesco all'Italiana' or 'Poliziotteschi'... Sorry! I'm sounding like a right cunt but fuck it....

I never remember the correct spelling of the Italian words so I just say Italian crime  :-\

Love this film a lot, it is one of my all-time favorite Italian crime films. That fish tank scene is one of the greatest murder scenes I have ever seen. What a masterpiece!  ::)

Love the Gianni Ferrio score too, I have the CD of it.

I love this film - did anyone else notice how Steven Soderbergh stole the theme song from Tony Arzenta and put it in his godawful OCEAN'S 12?

I agree about Tessari being an underrated talent - BLOODSTAINED BUTTERFLY is one of my favourite gialli.

Those 2 assassinations near the start at Ettore Manni's gym are great, love the way Delon looks at the guy who walks into the office and cooly takes him out. :'(

There's a few French posters of this i'm tempted to buy, best of the bunch is this:

Yeah, Delon is super cool in this. Also in the aforementioned fish tank scene where the guy is asleep and he calmly wakes him up before shooting him. What a cracking film, just talking about it makes me want to watch it again.

Ever since I bought the Japanese DVD I've never once regretted shelling out the high price for it. Worth every penny.

Now that poster is very cool, i'll have to track one of those down at some point.  Really regret not picking the Japanese DVD up, this one did not stay in print for long.

Loving your signature pic Lefteris.

Here's the danish release! Nice knowing that at least one 'euro-action'-film was partially shot here in Denmark!!!

Tessari also made quite a few Spaghettis that are well worth a watch including, A PISTOL FOR RINGO, RETURN OF RINGO, ALIVE OR PREFERABLY DEAD, LONG LIVE YOUR DEATH to name a few.

I thought the Japanese DVD of this was out of print?  I am certain that I checked CDJapan a year ago and it was unavailable.  Just had a look on their site and noticed that it is still in print so I have ordered a copy for around £17, not bad for a Japanese DVD.
