I could be wrong but I think most, if not all, genre directors were generally looked down upon by the critics, Fulci, Deodato, Lenzi, Massi, Margheriti/etc.
Off the top of my head I can only imagine directors like Elio Petri, Argento, Fellini, Passolini being well received. (?) It's easy to see why they would be considered 'better' but they seem to ignore the fact that Lenzi and co did make stunning conventional 'studio' pictures.
There was an interesting bit about this in the Making of Cannibal Holocaust documentary on the (Italian) Alan Young dvd, where one the people being interviewed comments on the fall of the Italian film industry and lays blame squarely with the critics of the times; saying film financiers would blow a lot of money on big budget films by critically appraised directors and then proceed to lose lots of money when nobody, except the art house crowds and the critics, would pay to see them.
