Never thought I'd like Lenzi's 'Giallo in the sun' but found after seeing the DVD in all it's widescreen glory, with some excellent cinematography, that I really liked it a lot.

Quite bizarre to see Carroll Baker playing a racing driver but if it helps the plot along then it's fine by me! Not at all gory or mean spirited like some gialli can be this ones a good honest twist riddled thriller that is a pleasure to watch.

Lovely looking disc this and lovely work Jonny!   ::)  It looked even better upscaled, really colourful print.

After watching the majority of Lenzi's poliziesco I have come to appreciate his work even more.  I don't think his gialli are as strong as his poliziesco entries but they are still good fun.

Glad you liked it mate, also good to hear that it looks good upscaled! Hopefully next time you hear someone call Lenzi a hack director you'll have a good argument to beg to differ!

Never understood why Lenzi is referred to as a hack.  Those who believe this is so should seek out ALMOST HUMAN and some of his other work from the early 1970s rather than his cannibal films.  In interviews he has stated that he only made the cannibal films because they were commercially viable at the time and his heart was not really in it.  His cannibal films do pale in comparison to his gialli and poliziesco films but I still have a soft spot for EATEN ALIVE. ;D

Has anyone heard of an English-friendly release of this? I'm surprised that these early Lenzi gialli haven't been picked up by Severin or someone like that.

Fuck those piece of shit "critics". The man may not be Fellini but he certainly made a handful of great films and that's a fact.

I could be wrong but I think most, if not all, genre directors were generally looked down upon by the critics, Fulci, Deodato, Lenzi, Massi, Margheriti/etc.

Off the top of my head I can only imagine directors like Elio Petri, Argento, Fellini, Passolini being well received. (?) It's easy to see why they would be considered 'better' but they seem to ignore the fact that Lenzi and co did make stunning conventional 'studio' pictures.

There was an interesting bit about this in the Making of Cannibal Holocaust documentary on the (Italian) Alan Young dvd, where one the people being interviewed comments on the fall of the Italian film industry and lays blame squarely with the critics of the times; saying film financiers would blow a lot of money on big budget films by critically appraised directors and then proceed to lose lots of money when nobody, except the art house crowds and the critics, would pay to see them.

Sounds like a darn good giallo. I haven't seen any of Caroll Baker's gialli by Umberto though.

Lenzi's made some really good films and a couple that can't be ignored. Spasmo is my favorite of his films, but I'm curious to see these (well, okay Jean Sorel).

strangely, there' s nothing. some really pristine copies can be found on the grey market, but apart from the odd japanese release and italian discs without Engl subs, Lenzi's Carrol-Baker-vehicles still remain to be released properly.
I'd love to see an interview with Baker today, that would make a nice supplement.

The Japanese disc of KNIFE OF ICE is in English.

Rare Magnetic Video tape of A QUIET PLACE TO KILL up on eBay.  I didn't realize this even existed.  The description says it's longer than the Unicorn tape (maybe those nude shower rear views of Carroll Baker in the Italian version made it to the US after all).

I started watching this film today -- the Millenium Storm DVD is really a thing of beauty.  I love the mystery/thriller/love-triangle style of giallos and Lenzi was the master.  It would be nice to have an English language dub available to match up with this disc since I can tell at least Carroll Baker is speaking her native tounge.  The Italian dub does lend a good 'continental feel' to the film though.  Also, it's a damn shame that the airy, loungy soundtrack has never been released.  Did Piero Umiliani do the music?  I must have missed it as the opening credits flashed by.

Gregorio García Segura is credited with the score but it sounds very much like Umiliani (the theme song is by Umiliani and Lilian Terry according to this blogpost which suggests that Segura is credited for co-production reasons and that the score is indeed by Umiliani).
