Title: Scorpion Releasing ( US )
Post by: babybreese on 06 Aug 2009 - 18:47
Scorpion Releasing is a new DVD label out of Seattle Washington.  Their first releases are up with street dates ( CHEERLEADERS WILD WEEKEND & SILENT SCREAM ), and they are linked with Code Red in some fashion.

Scorpion Releasing - DVDaf (http://www.dvdaf.com/search.html?pub=Scorpion+Releasing&rgn=us&init_form=str0_pub_Scorpion+Releasing*rgn_us)

They are also the ones working on a certain Vanessa Howard / Freddie Francis gem and there should be an announcement in Sept. or so.

Looking forward to that one, did they get back to you about the trailers you've got?

I am sending a dvd-r of the trailer to them along with some images that might be of use.  The trailer is really good, just a 30 second spot but it's all hard sell of Vanessa with some high profile quotes ( She's luscious - NY Post / She's Sensual / She's some girl! - NY Magazine & Girly takes up where Baby Jane leaves off - Rona Barrett ) text over Vanessa chopping wood, sucking a thumb ect...it's a great spot.  I have read Cinerama did not support GIRLY but this TV spot indicates they did try.

I watched [amazondvd]The Last Grenade[/amazondvd] tonight and there was a trailer on there for it, looks good.

From the facebook page:

On 2/11, we at Scorpion are releasing FORCE FIVE. To make a long story short, I convinced Code Red that this title has a much broader appeal and deserves a wider release than just being available at his store. So watch it hit the shelves on 2/11!

The DVD will feature a brand new 16x9 widescreen master in HD, and an original trailer.

From Scorpion releasing:

"Due to the dismal BluRay sales (most selling 600 or less) of the titles that had been out before numerous times on DVD, and the fact that the DVDs of some of these BluRay titles sold much better (DEATHSHIP, TOMBOY to name a few) , Any titles falling into this category, I will only press 1,000 (1,200 on the more popular ones) BluRays and sell them as limited editions.
Now, since I don’t have an outlet to sell direct yet, these new Limited Edition Blu-Rays will be sold by Code Red on their website, as he seems to have found a much more successful mode for selling catalog BluRays than I have selling them through retail outfits. (now I can see why Twilight Time went with this business approach)
The first batch of BluRays that will be sold on Code Red's web site are:
GIRLY
MORTUARY
DON’T ANSWER THE PHONE
And the long awaited release of GRIZZLY (since DAY OF THE ANIMALS sold less than TOWER OF EVIL or THE UNSEEN, and both of those sold barely 1,000 units, which is why I think 1,000 - 1200 is the right number to press these titles, like GRIZZLY.)
Also, all future BluRay titles will now be put on hold (like SORORITY HOUSE MASSACRE and HAUNTING OF MORELLA), until each are carefully determined to see if they have a shot at making a profit through retail outlets (only two BluRays have for me so far) or will be a limited edition that will be available on my new web site that I am building. The future status of all BluRays I release will be evaluated and any decisions will be posted here.
Thank you for understanding."

I spotted that too. Not sure if I'll upgrade though.

I think the direct to consumer route is definitely a better way to go for these niche labels.

I hope they get sold through Diabolik too, Shipping gets really dear in the Code Red store compared to what it actually costs. (In steps Bruno with to justify it with "Jiffy bags and travelling to the post office costs" etc  ;D )

Same here. $11 shipping for one title. Still, I always find Bill's shipping times fast.

That's not so bad, it's when you get multiples.

I was thinking of TT rather than CR when I said that - Bill's shipping is very dear compared to other places.

You can't put a price on exercise, Aarron.

that's a great news!  ::)

Never saw Girly, is it worth the blind buy for exploitation lovers ?

GIRLY is exploitation, but light on the usual exploitation elements, it a wicked dark comedy more than anything.

Good news on the Scorpion front.  The short lived Cartel web store is history, it was not a good route for distribution.  All previously released titles will be available through Diabolik, titles are trickling back to Walter from various retailers and they will all eventually go to Diabolik, which will be the only source for previously issued titles, like GIRLY.

All new titles, like CANDLE FOR THE DEVIL& SPASMO, will be handled by Scorpion's new exclusive distributor.  No name yet, but the ink seems to be drying on the contracts and as soon as an announcement can be made, it will.
This new distributor will also ship internationally, which should help some people get a hold of their product.  :P

Scorpion have just announced Screen Archives ( home of Twilight Time ) will handle their upcoming limited BD's, pre orders for the first 2 titles ( CANDLE FOR THE DEVIL & STRIPPED TO KILL go live on March 2, shipping on the 17th ).  The dvd of CANDLE is already at Diabolik ( feb 24th is the official street date ) & an early review of the dvd is here & it looks quite nice.

Scorpion is also getting ready to ship a pile of their older limited BD's to Diabolik shortly.

Walt should have sorted Candle out ages ago. I may well just wait for the upcoming Odeon UK release now but would have been a surefire buy any time over the last few months when originally planned.

Frustrating delay for sure but you can't fault them for getting their new distribution straightened out.  Also Scorpion did color correction on the source which won't be part of the Odeon ( they might do their own though).  I am supporting Scorpion to start but will be keeping on eye on the Odeon release in case they better it.

I'll keep an eye on the sales and if it's going quick then I may have to grab the Scorpion disc. Odeon stuff rarely gets reviewed and I do want the best version.

Scorpion is pushing their Blu of DON'T GO IN THE HOUSE back til August as Walter discovered the OCN contains a longer cut of the film ( 91 Vs familiar 82 min ).  All scenes expand  character and add backstory, all nasty bits made the short cut.

This will be a limited release and his rights expire in December.

Title: Re: Scorpion Releasing ( US )
Post by: babybreese on 13 Dec 2016 - 19:45
So, Walter extended the rights, the film looks great, has never before cut scenes, & the BD is available at the new Ronin web store.......

.....and the film has an alternate ( apparently ) tv friendly audio track that replaces curse words which is a major bummer.  I doubt Scorpion can afford a recall, we'll see what happens.

So it looks to be probably some mutant TV version before any violence was cut. Seems it had a failed preview and the director's cut would be something else with maybe also some other footage that isn't present and not necessarily everything that is.
