From Wikipedaia
"Giallo" films are characterized by extended murder sequences featuring excessive bloodletting, stylish camerawork and unusual musical arrangements. The literary whodunit element is retained, but combined with modern slasher horror, while being filtered through Italy's longstanding tradition of opera and staged grand guignol drama. They also generally include liberal amounts of nudity and sex.
Gialli typically introduce strong psychological themes of madness, alienation, and paranoia. For example, Sergio Martino's Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (also known as Eye of the Black Cat) was explicitly based on Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Black Cat".
They remain notable in part for their expressive use of music, most notably by Dario Argento's collaborations with Ennio Morricone and his musical director Bruno Nicolai, and later with the band Goblin.

There are literally scores of gialli out there - some are brilliant examples of the genre, some enjoyable trash and others that are just plain shite. Which are the films that have you coming back for more? Here are some of my favourites, in no particular order:

We always have at least 4 titles in common :P

Good to see Dallamano's 'What have they done to your Daughters?' on some of the lists and if i'm not mistaken Comp has a scene from it as his signature picture ::)

Dallamano's 'Schoolgirl' films are all excellent, I'd have included 'Red Rings of Fear' (he scripted/story) if it wasn't for lack of a decent DVD release.

I never look at these threads before I post in them either, I open them up and go straight to the bottom and post, I prefer to see the similarities after I've posted my list... :'(
-
You certainly are right, Stephen – my sig features a still from Dallamano’s film. I love DAUGHTERS and think it has an edge over SOLANGE, personally speaking. I like the way in which it comes across as a hybrid of cop flick and giallo.

That's right, I always thought DAUGHTERS was a superior movie- SOLANGE is not bad at all but DAUGHTERS, I could never get tired of. Even if RED RINGS had a decent release, it would still be regarded as inferior compared to Dallamano's movies. Not a bad film either, just not a really special one in my opinion.
-
This is such a great genre with so many superb films to choose from. But off the top of my head, my favourites would be:
Deep Red
All the Colors of the Dark
Short Night of the Glass Dolls
Your Vice is a Locked Door and Only I have the Key
The House with Laughing Windows
Opera
My Dear Killer
The Bloodstained Shadow
Bird with the Crystal Plumage
Lizard in a Woman's Skin
Torso
Seven Blood Stained Orchids
These are the ones I seem to revisit the most. Of course the list changes as I see new films. It really is a wonderful genre, one that I can never get enough of.
-
Crimes of the Black Cat
Bird With the Crystal Plumage
The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh
What Have They Done to Your Daughters?
Eyeball
-
Nothing startlingly original from me i'm afraid. Just about in order of preference:
Don't Torture a Duckling
Deep Red
Solange
Lizard in a Woman's Skin
What Have.......Daughters
Your Vice is.......
Strange Vice of.......
-
Obviously there's no way to ignore Argento in this list for me :-*
1) Tenebrae
(For way too many reasons, most notably for giving me a taste for Euro horror at the right time to make me a lifelong addict ;D)
2) Opera
(Oh no, not Argento AGAIN! :o Ah, what the ....! I find this movie relentlessly rewatchable and at the time of writing, it's been Dario's last true masterpiece. ;))
3) Blood And Black Lace
(A Five Star feast for the eyes!)
4) Don't Torture A Duckling
(I'd volunteer to remake this instantly if somebody was crazy enough to fund me! ;D)
5) The New York Ripper
(For hitting its audience out of nowhere with a totally unexpected emotional "sledge hammer!" at the very end! :) One could discuss Fulci's alleged misogynist treatment of his female characters, but NYR doesn't make the debate as easy as some might think after a first, rushed glance. :-\)

Anything with Mario Adorf is awesome!
Call me crazy, but I like Four Flies on Grey Velvet, I know it's quirky but I enjoy it for that. The flamboyant detective, Bud Spencer, the coffin expo, the scimitar flashbacks, etc.
I think The Bird with the Crystal Plumage is simply a classic and perhaps somewhat genre-defining, while Deep Red is the be-all and end-all of gialli, they should have stopped making them after it came out.
Other top gialli:
Lizard in a Woman's Skin
Blood and Black Lace This one is considered one of the first of the genre, I love that the killer bears a striking resemblance to Charlston Comics character The Question, who Alan Moore also used as a basis for his character Rorschach in Watchmen. Interestingly The Question first appeared in 1967, so maybe the killer's outfit in this movie was an inspiration for the comic character..
Knife of Ice left a good impression on me, a subdued film, and surprisingly lacking in gore for an Umberto Lenzi flick, this one is boiling with atmosphere and had some twists that I didn't anticipate.
Short Night of Glass Dolls left an impression on me for breaking from the mold of the genre.
I'm sure there are others I can't think of at the moment.. to me, even some of the worst Gialli are enjoyable to watch. I've only seen a few that have been utterly unbearable, I think Death Carries a Cane is one that comes to mind..
-
Tenebrae is my fave giallo. In the opening scenes, Anthony Franciosa is shown heading toward the airport on his bike. The steel girders of the bridge keep blocking and fragmenting his image. Does anybody think Argento deliberately filmed it this way to show Peter Neals schizo state of mind?

Who Saw Her Diet
Is that about a fat bird :D
That Robbie Coltrane flick--THE POPE MUST DIE--was released in the States as THE POPE MUST DIET, as newspapers refused to advertise something that sound so blasphemous. :-\
-
SMILE BEFORE DEATH (anybody else seen this?)
FIFTH CORD (great cinematography)
-
SMILE BEFORE DEATH (anybody else seen this?)
yup, didn´t like it all that much... but the theme song is nice and catchy!
-
SMILE BEFORE DEATH (anybody else seen this?)
FIFTH CORD (great cinematography)
I liked smile before death also :) I would really like to see a decent restored print of this one.
'Probably' the catchiest giallo-theme tune I can remember...(after Goblin's Deep Red and Tenebre)
If anyone wants them, here are English subtitles for 'The Man with Icy Eyes' (my 1st Italian fansub - it took about 16 hours!)
http://rapidshare.com/files/89928249/L_uomo.Dagli.Occhi.di.Ghiaccio.VHSRip.XViD-CM.rar.html
I found this film incredibly talky...I am guessing it's based on a book- does anyone know?
-
What do people think of IN THE EYE OF THE HURRICANE with Jean Sorel, Analia Gade, Tony Kendall, and Rosanna Yanni? I've never seen it so I'm looking for recommendations (and a source).
-
EYE O/T HURRICANE was released on VHS in Holland and Belgium.
It's quite good. Good story.

I just watched Autopsy and thoroughly enjoyed it. Watched Perfume of the Lady in Black last night which was a great trip, but what was going on in the final frames?!
-
My list is pretty much the same as when I first posted, but since I'm watching a slew of gialli right now more might be added.
I just bought In the Folds of the Flesh which sounds whacked.
-
I just bought In the Folds of the Flesh which sounds whacked.
It's even more whacked than it sounds. :-*
I love that movie. :-X
-
Until now my top 10 would be:
1. Profondo Rosso
Truly the best Giallo. Argento is in total control of his art: every sequence is an artwork. It reaches perfection and stands miles above the other gialli.
2. All The Colors of The Dark
Unpredictable, groovy and sexy. Edwige, Martino and Nicolai at their best. The blend of giallo and gothic works perfectly.
3. The House With Laughing Windows
I love the atmosphere in this movie. The whole film seems to be haunted.
4. Tenebre
Cold, violent, elegant. This is the ultimate giallo. Every ingredient is there: the twisted mind, the naked flesh, the flowing blood, the sharp blade, the bleak urban landscape, etc... It's as giallo as it can be! It's, for me, the conclusion of the genre in its "classic" form. After that, most gialli are dispensable formulaic slashers.
5. The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh
An excellent "sexy thriller". It's a surprisingly mature work for such a young director. The flash back sequences in slow motion are little masterpieces. I like how Martino manipulates us (you enjoy it, we'll she does as well!). It's a shame that the sadomasochist theme is put in the background in the end...
6. What Have You Done to Solange?
I rarely like "serious" gialli, but this one is an exception. Strong story, cast and music. And that Aristide Massaccesi knows how to use a camera!
7. Torso
A very good slasher with many iconic moments: the girl in the forest, the massacre at the end,... and if Tina Aumont is in it, it can't be bad!
8. The Night Evelyn Came Out of The Grave
It doesn't make much sense but I enjoy it a lot. The ending is a twist fiesta!
9. The Perfume of The Lady in Black
Barilli seems to be lost. Mimsy Farmer keeps climbing up and down the stairs, has visions, scream and cry,... I never understood what it was all about, and I like it that way! Visually it's a jewel. The romantic soundtrack by Piovani is also very good.
10. A Lizard in A Woman's Skin
I'm not a Fulci fan. Most of his film are depressing visions - saturated with misanthropy and nihilism. I know where he goes, and I don't want to go that way. A Lizard in a Woman's Skin belongs to his best period, when he was still an ambitious artist, not yet obsessed with putrefaction. The dream sequence in the beginning is fascinating. In this period, I like also Una Sull'Altra.
Mario Bava is missing, I know. I like his gothic tales (Black Sunday, Lisa & The Devil, Operazione Paura,...) but I find his gialli dull and artificial. They lack the sensuality, the madness and the violence of the ones by Argento, Martino or Dallamano. Some are even really sloppy (Cf. 5 Dolls for an August Moon).
-
this site looks awesome...
here are my top 5:
1. Don't Torture A Duckling
2. Black Belly of the Tarantula
3. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
4. A Lizard in a Woman's Skin
5. Deep Red
-
Welcome to the forum Josey Wales :-\
-
The House with Laughing Windows should be on my list!
I knew I omitted a biggie. ;D
That whole narration by the painter along with the stabbing footage is among the most arresting Italian horror ever, imo.
-
Hmmm... A tough question - there are so many excellent works out there.
My top choices (in alphabetical order - by English Title):
Reazione a catena (Bay of Blood)
L' Uccello dalle piume di cristallo (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage)
La tarantola dal ventre nero (Black Belly of the Tarantula)
La casa con la scala nel buio (A Blade in the Dark)
Sette scialli di seta gialla (Crimes of the Black Cat)
Profondo Rosso (Deep Red)
4 mosche di velluto grigio (Four Flies on Grey Velvet)
L'assassino è costretto ad uccidere ancora (The Killer Must Kill Again)
Una lucertola con la pelle di donna (A Lizard in a Woman's Skin)
Mio caro assassino (My Dear Killer)
Opera
Il profumo della signora in nero (The Perfume of the Lady in Black)
Morte sospetta di una minorenne (Suspected Death of a Minor)
Suspiria
Tenebre
I corpi presentano tracce di violenza carnale (Torso)
Cosa avete fatto a Solange? (What Have You Done to Solange?)
... and it was difficult just choosing those few :-*
-
Add
I corpi presentano tracce di violenza carnale (Torso)
to my list.
I just screened this again: certain scenes are breathtaking. The forest stalking sequence, the first kill etc.
Nice batch of red herrings too.
Oh and the dog fight between John Richardson and Luc Merenda ;) made up for the vast quantities of titties occupying the screen.
This film confirms why I enjoy Sergio Martino's gialli, and what I can learn from him.
-
House with the Laughing Windows - this was a big surprise, as I hadn't seen it until about a month ago...really creepy and mysterious even after you finish watching it. Sticks with you for days afterwards, and is truly a scary movie.
Opera - my favorite Argento giallo, just slightly ahead of Deep Red.
Don't Torture a Duckling - the film that singlehandedly sent me head-first into my Italian film obsession. Great soundtrack, great actors, beautifully shot. Probably Fulci's finest moment?
I just watched Nothing Underneath and although full of cliches, was really an enjoyable giallo that managed to pull the rug out from even me with that amazing ending...
braindead right now...will think of more later.
-
alright, I'll toss in my 2cts...
favourites:
BLOOD & BLACK LACE / BAVA (the title theme is enough to give me a boost of adrenalin)
LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN / FULCI
BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE / ARGENTO
COSI DOLCE COSI PERVERSA / LENZI
(ludicrous dialogue, but Baker, Trintignant and Blanc are amazing to watch. nice score, too)
DEEP RED / ARGENTO
SOLANGE / DALLAMANO
FIFTH CORD / BAZZONI (Storao behind the camera, Django in front of it!)
FIVE DOLLS / BAVA (makes no sense but looks breathtaking)
SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS / LADO
DEATH WALKS AT MIDNIGHT / ERCOLI (love any movie with Navarro & Andreu!)
I hate Mimsy Farmer, so I didn't include PERFUME or FOUR FLIES, though I love them. HOUSE WITH THE LAUGHING WINDOWS seems more of a rural gothic horror movie, to me at least. so I din't include this one either.
Worst Gialli:
DELIRIUM / POLSELLI
(towards the end of the movie I just felt like killing Rita Calderoni with my own hands! "Erbert!.... Erbert!!!!"...aaargh)
EYEBALL / LENZI (I usually like Lenzi, but this is REALLY shabby)
PLAY MOTEL (Yaaaaaawn! Perhaps I should try and watch this without the hardcore porn scenes, but I don't think I've got the time...)
BLUES EYES OF THE BROKEN DOLL / AURED
(Aured the Spanish Ed Wood? nothing works here. zero suspense, zero atmosphere, zero anything....)
TRAGIC CEREMONY / FULCI
(does this qualify as a Giallo, somehow? Anyway, it's AWFUL)
MURDER OBSESSION / FREDA
(I never thought that Fulci and Freda could deliver something so boring and crappy as this)
MOST ABSURD GIALLO:
IN THE FOLDS OF THE FLESH / BERGONZELLI - I love it! that scene with the cuckoo clock, and those flashbacks. the wigs, the stares, the outfits, the plot holes - priceless. gotta watch this again, very soon! pure madness.
-
out of the few i've seen my dear killer sticks out. but remember being bored shitless by the pyjama girl case.
bought cat o'nine tails on dvd the otherday so shall give that one ago.
-
The all time no.1 for me is Tenebrae. It has everything. Sets and locations are pure, classic Argento at the height of his powers.
Deep Red. No.2
After that there are a number I enjoy although they may or may not be particularly 'good' in a filmmaking sense.
Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh.
Don't Torture a Duckling.
Black Belly of the Tarantula.
Perfume of a Lady in Black.
Seven Blood-Stained Orchids.
Amuck. Not really a Giallo by some definitions.
Strip Nude for You Killer. I know, I'm shameless.
Case of the Bloody Iris.
-

They could for the fact that both Forsyth's (John Harrington) and Burton's character (Baron von Sepper) is a delusional psychopath, and each is knocking off person after person. Forsyth's character's issues are rooted in psychosexual trauma from his youth. Burton knocks off each women after he sleeps with her.
However, we know they are killers from the outset, unlike most Gialli in which we are trying to guess who the killer is.

I'm new to the genre so my experience is limited, but from what I've seen so far:

My two all-times favorites are definitely Tenebre and Opera. The Interwebz has lead me to believe that there's a significant number of people that think Martino rivals Argento in terms of who deserves the "Giallo King" moniker, but I've never been overly impressed with Martino's work (he's nowhere near as stylish as Argento, and he ruins otherwise excellent plots with very contrived and anticlimactic endings).
Besides Tenebre and Opera, my favorite gialli are the really sleazy and ultraviolent ones. I've heard Black Angel and The Monster of Florence are pretty over-the-top, but the sleaziest giallo that I've been able to get my hands on so far is Giallo a Venezia.
-
My favorite gialli are what have you done to solange ? , who saw her die , bay of blood , la sorella di ursula , play motel ( hard version ) and giallo a venezia .
-
THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDH
TENEBRAE
LIZARD IN A WOMANS SKIN
.....EYEBALL - (def a unique one with a lot of charm)
FORBIDDEN PHOTOS OF A LADY ABOVE SUSPICION - (for the sets, props and clothing alone)
Ive noticed everybodys lists are quite long - what a great thing, that there are enough of these gems out there for us all to have several favourites. Long live gialli!!!
-
1 Deep Red (A creepy film with "style to burn" , I think Argentos best film in front of the first 3)
2 Tenebrae ( which I saw in a London cinema with " The Monster Club"...I used to love the review
in Time Out where the wimpy reviewer said "by the end of the film most of the cast have undergone savage cuts ( something the film could have done with as well..)
3 Black belly of the tarantula ( great Morricone lounge lizard music / with phoney rubber knife killings
with Anabella Incontrera (who had an affair with a Tory politician according to the News of the World)
4 Death laid an egg
5 The Bloodstained Butterfly ( A well made film )
6 Crimes of the Black cat ( I remember seeing this at the Scala and having a laughing fit at the bogus cat jumping at the camera with Anthony Stiff one
7 Blood and Black Lace ( The Scala turned red and green when this was shown )
8 Death carries a Cane ( not all filmakers can be Orson Welles ! )
-
Hi everybody,
I am French and my English is not perfect. For my first mail, I would like to know what you think about "The cat o' nine tails" (my favorite giallo). It is strange, I have the feeling that a lot of Argento fans don't like very much this great movie.
-
Salut,
I think it is a brilliant giallo. I have the original Italian poster hanging proudly on my wall!

Welcome P.F.
I like Cat too, I think Four Flies is the weakest one from that period.
-
I love the end of "Four flies on grey velvet". What emotion! The death of Nina Tobias is almost filmed like a deliverance for her.
-
Welcome PF.
I don't dislike CAT but I do prefer FLIES and BIRD.
-
Cat is a great giallo imho, love it.
Also love Four Flies btw. :D

Well, all the Argentos are surely top notch and one of the greatest gialli. But apart from Darios some my favorites are:
La morte accarezza a mezzanotte / Death walks at midnight
-This perhaps is not the best Giallo in general consensus, but there is so much emotional content to it that it is one of my favorites, it's the one that started it all for me. So this is the first giallo I've ever seen. It was 7 or 8 years ago when I was 15 or 16 when it came from tv one night. By then I didn't know anything about giallo and after seeing it I was like woooooww, but could not guess there would be a whole bunch of other movies like it. The movie popped into my mind every once in a while, but I don't know why didn't I check for it from the internet or anything. But then accidently 2 years ago I got to Dario Argento movies as they were released on one Scandinavian label and were very cheap, like 5 euros. Bought them, checked more about them from the internet and got hooked really badly to giallo. And after the Argentos this one was the first giallos i bought on dvd. I think it's fucking great! One of the best soundtracks ever by Gianni Ferrio, Susan Scott is so sexy and it's very entertaining one.
Sei donne per l'assassino / Blood And Black Lace
-So stylish. I was lucky enough to see this one in a movie theatre last winter as it had this Giallo theme series. One of the favorites.
Giornata nera per l'ariete / The Fifth Cord
-So great camera work, beautiful film. Also managed to see this on big screen and it looked fantastic!
and last but not least Sergio Martino's:
Lo strano vizio della Signora Wardh / Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh
Torso
La coda dello scorpione / Case of the scorpion's tail
-
I like The Black Belly of the Tarantula quite a lot. The plot was very well put together compared to some gialli I have seen and Giannini's character was complex and sympathetic. Not that a plot that makes no sense negates my enjoyment of a giallo, but I thought this one stood out for being well-crafted.
-
Here are some of my favorite giallos:
Delirio caldo (1972)
Profondo rosso (1975)
Qualcosa striscia nel buio (1971)

Hello, everyone!
I'm still a little new to this whole game, but The House With Laughing Windows is probably my favorite aside from Argento's work. Tenebre and Opera are my favorite gialli from Dario.

Welcome Strade ::)
Thanks! I'm currently on a quest to watch as many gialli as humanly possible.
I have much to learn from you all. ;)

I discovered or re-discovered a few Gialli recently, I though I would update my "favorite" list.
As time goes by, the holy trinity - Bava, Argento and Fulci - slowly disappear from my TOP10. It's strange...
01: THE PERFUME OF THE LADY IN BLACK (Francesco Barilli, 1974)
A little jewel from one of my favorite Italian director. Elegant and hypnotic.
02: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE? (Massimo Dallamano, 1972)
An excellent Giallo. Strong story, strong cast, beautiful photography.
03: THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS WARDH (Sergio Martino, 1970)
One of the most entertaining Gialli. Erotic, violent, twisted. A classic, with Italy's most memorable scream queen, Edwige Fenech.
04: PROFONDO ROSSO (Dario Argento, 1975)
Argento's Masterpiece. A fascinating work of art that deserves its iconic status.
05: LA CASA DALLE FINESTRE CHI RIDONO (Pupi Avati, 1976)
La Casa is a door... to something really disturbing. A haunted movie, unforgettable.
06: ENIGMA ROSSO (Alberto Negrin, 1978)
It falls apart in the end, but the first 45 minutes are brilliant. It's intense, dark and disturbing.
07: L'ASSASSINO E COSTRETTO AD UCCIDERE ANCORA (Luigi Cozzi, 1975)
A solid thriller, dynamic and clever. Antoine Saint-John delivers a very strong performance.
08: THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (Mario Bava, 1963)
Its suffers from a low ambition, but I enjoy it a lot. My favorite Bava with Operazione Paura.
09: TENEBRE (Dario Argento, 1982)
Vicious, cold, insane. The ultimate Giallo. Argento's last good movie, in my opinion.
10: A BLADE IN THE DARK (Lamberto Bava, 1983)
Silly but hugely entertaining. A guilty pleasure.
-
Is All the Colors of the Dark considered a giallo? I like this one a lot. Furthermore, I like the Jess Franco entry Bloody Moon. Dunno why that kept with me... Or is this one not considered a giallo either? Guess it's definitely not stereotypical.
This is one boring ass giallo if you ask me: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071537/. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071537/.) Though I dislike many many more...
Another one I DO like, though is Le foto di Gioia by Lamberto Bava http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093043/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093043/) Nice 80's flick, and I think my favorite of this director.
-
05: LA CASA DALLE FINESTRE CHI RIDONO (Pupi Avati, 1976)
La Casa is a door... to something really disturbing. A haunted movie, unforgettable.
A lovely movie that is not considered a giallo by everyone, I think. But actually this one and "Don't torture a duckling" are some of my favorite italian 'cult' movies. I think both are gialli, but theyre both a-typical gialli (or giallos, whatever you prefer).
-
Lots of Giallos merge into one film in my memory, but are still enjoyable when you're actually watching them.
The seminal Giallos for me are -
Opera.
Blood and Black Lace.
Death Laid an Egg.
Don't Torture a Duckling.
Who Saw Her Die.
Deep Red.
The Fifth Cord.
Perfume of the lady in Black.
The Blood Stained Butterfly.
Guilty Pleasures -
Nothing Underneath.
Giallo A Venezia.
Slaughter Hotel.
Murder Rock.
The New york ripper.
Play Motel.
-
All the colors of darks despite some horror elements is absolutely a giallo.
Im a big fan too of Bloody moon but i considered that more a slasher than a giallo, but this is my personal point of viewing off course
-

ok lamberto wil never be as good as his dad but this is very good very impressed with it.

Have either of these (and Death Laid An Egg) ever seen a legit DVD release? All three of these still elude this giallo maniac.... :)
-
Death Laid an Egg was released on DVD in Japan by King Records with an English audio track. It has also been released in Italy in a slightly different variant with better picture quality but sadly no English options. A fan DVD of the Japanese DVD exists that includes missing scenes taken from a VHS tape as extras. See the dedicated thread for more information.
Giallo a Venezia has never been officially released in DVD but an excellent fan composite produced by Marc does exist. This was sourced from VHS.
As for Play Motel, only poor quality VHS rips exists. I have an Italian screener taken from VHS and even that is poor quality. A Greek DVD exists but that is sourced from VHS.

i havent seen that many but my favourites are who saw her die, a blade in the dark, deep red and the strange vice of mrs wardh.
-
I have only two favourite Gialli !
The first one is "The closet circut" and the second "Tropic of Cancer" !
-
I've enjoyed reading through this topic. Many of the lists contained great movies and offered some new titles for me to hunt. I'd like to offer my list.
1. What Have They Done to Your Daughters? (La polizia chiede aiuto)
- Maybe not really the greatest example of giallo films but definitely a great film by Massimo Dallamano.
2. What Have You Done to Solange? (Cosa avete fatto a Solange?)
- A true giallo from Massimo Dallamano. It took a while to get this picture but it really was worth the waiting. Fabio Testi is really good in leading role.
3. Strip Nude for Your Killer (Nude per l'assassino)
- Maybe a bit sleazy but nonetheless effective movie. These are the kind of movies that just wouldn't get made in the US.
4. Seven Blood-Stained Orchids (Sette orchidee macchiate di rosso)
- Good murder mystery. It was some time ago that I watched this for the last time but it's effective every time.
5. Deep Red (Profondo rosso)
- A list wouldn't be complete without something from Dario Argento.
Bubbling under:
Don't Torture a Duckling (Non si sevizia un paperino)
A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin (Lucertola con la pelle di donna)
Perfume of the Lady In Black (Profumo della Signora in Nero)
Blood and Black Lace
The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (Lo strano vizio della Signora Wardh)
-
So many out there that could make a top 10. Without Argento and Fulci it would be:
1 Death Walks at Midnight (dir: Luciano Ercoli)
2 The Red Queen Kills Seven Times (dir: Emilio Miraglia)
3 Love and Death in the Garden of the Gods (dir: Sauro Scavolini)
4 The Double, aka La controfigura (dir: Romolo Guerrieri)
5 Short Night of Glass Dolls (dir: Aldo Lado)
6 The Possessed, aka La donna del lago Lago (dir: Luigi Bazzoni, Franco Rossellini)
7 The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (dir: Sergio Martino)
8 The Fifth Cord (dir: Luigi Bazzoni)
9 The Bloodstained Butterfly (dir: Duccio Tessari)
10 Tropic of Cancer, aka Al tropico del cancro, aka Death in Haiti (dir: Giampaolo Lomi, Edoardo Mulargia)
With Argento/Fulci reinstated:
1 Tenebrae (dir: Dario Argento)
2 Deep Red (dir: Dario Argento)
3 Opera (dir: Dario Argento)
4 Lizard in a woman's Skin (dir: Lucio Fulci)
5 Death Walks at Midnight (dir: Luciano Ercoli)
6 The Red Queen Kills Seven Times (dir: Emilio Miraglia; OOP NoShame)
7 Love and Death in the Garden of the Gods (dir: Sauro Scavolini)
8 The Double, aka La controfigura (dir: Romolo Guerrieri)
9 Short Night of Glass Dolls (dir: Aldo Lado)
10 Four Flies on Grey Velvet (dir: Dario Argento)
-
Have only seen four gialli so far, but I would rate them thus:
- DEEP RED
- THE FIFTH CORD
- TENEBRAE
- BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE
I watched BIRD recently and it was...OK. I felt it was Argento getting into his stride rather than anything else. DEEP RED stuck in my mind much more (and not just for the scary robot doll!!)

Hi guys!
I'm new here and since i love gialli my first post should be here. ;) In general my favorites are "by the book" gialli - violent and stylish murder mysteries. So my favorite 10 in no order are:
7 bloodstained orchids
My dear killer
Bloodstained shadow
Who saw her die
Opera
Bird with crystal plumage
Torso
Case of the bloody iris
A blade in the Dark
House with laughing windows
Sorry for my english, thanks for oportunity to be part of this great forum!!!
-

-

Second Johnny's statement, and your English is fine, mate! Cheers, and welcome!
-
I would say these:
1 L'uccello dalle piume di cristallo
2 Il gatto a nove code
3 Lo strano vizio della signora Wardh
4 La coda dello scorpione
5 Profondo rosso
6 Una lucertola con la pelle di donna
7 Cosa avete fatto a Solange?
8 Sei donne per l'assassino
9 Non si sevizia un paperino
10 La tarantula dal ventre nero
I know my list might seem a bit strange but, you know, that's my opinion, though... Regards, mates!!!
-
For me -
Deep Red
Tenebrae
Curse of the scorpion's tail
My Dear Killer (shockingly underated IMHO)
Seven blood stained orchids.
I've always struggled with Short night of glass dolls. It's beautifully shot but i wouldn't class it as a Giallo persee. More of a mystery thriller.
-
I love too many, but I'll start with my all time favorite giallo (and all time favorite film) -- Romolo Guerrieri's La Controfigura (aka, The Double, aka, Love Inferno) ... Some of my other favorites include Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion; Snapshot for Murder; Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh; Quiet Place to Kill; My Wife, A Body to Love; The Sweet Body of Deborah; Death Laid an Egg; Deadly Sweet; All the Colors of the Dark; Interabang; The Killer Wore Gloves; and many more!

Great list! I like your emphasis on the late 60s films.
-
I finally saw What Have You Done to Solange? today, and it immediately jumped to near the top of my list. Between the tightly plotted story, that terribly sad last scene, and beauties around every corner, not a dull moment was had. Great film. Wish the DVD wasn't out of print...
-
Hi, one of my favorite giallo is The Possessed aka La donna del lago from Luigi Bazzoni, its a real gem for me. I really love that depressive and sad atmosphere which movie has...
-
Recently, The Dead Are Alive jumped into my top 3 faves. So moody and so crazy. It's a good one.
-
Maybe its me, but I just saw:
BLOODSTAINED SHADOW
SHORT NIGHT OF GLASS DOLLS
WHO SAW HER DIE?
Saw them all for the 1st time via Blue Underground DVD.
Was not impressed with any of them! Although none were helped by having only English dub option.
Does anyone have anything good to say about these?

Those Lado movies are great.

I've been fortunate enough to be able to collect a good amount of all the good one's. I will definitely have to re-visit this again in the future but off the top of my head I really enjoyed The bird with the crystal plumage.
-
Deep Red (Dario Argento)
Suspiria (Dario Argento)
The third eye (Mino Guerrini)
La Residencia a.k.a. "The house that screamed" (Narciso Ibáñez Serrador) - It´s not Italian but from Spain; can be considered a giallo anyway
The short night of the glass dolls (Aldo Lado)
The house with laughing windows (Pupi Avati)
Tenebrae (Dario Argento)
The New York ripper (Lucio Fulci)
