By the way...if someone actually does bother buying this, would they please be kind enough to check for an error in the English audio track between 01:19:36 - 01:19:43? If there is a fault present at this point then it would confirm that they've taken the print from a dual audio fan edition which has done the rounds recently...of course Mya announced the release of their version shortly after that same fan composite...it's only a co-incidence though of course.

Is the dual audio version missing the sequence from the Finnish version?

Did you mean Flemish version ECC?

If, so yes - but the fan composite was two discs/versions:

Disc 1 -
Uncut composite version (including the scene above). English audio only.

Disc 2 -
Triple audio. Cut version.
English audio
Italian audio with fan subs
Soundtrack

Hope this helps.

RING OF DARKNESS is actually based on director Pier Carpi's own novel:

His first film,POVERO CRISTO,was also based on the novel of the same name.
This one features a great cast including Mino Reitano,Rosemarie Dexter,Edmund Purdom (appearing in top hat and tails throughout) and Curd Jurgens.

Here's the sales sheet someone posted at GDR.

I had the Mya dvd turn up this morning.

The film is presented in English or Italian (without English subtitles), i would have prefered to watch it in Italian with  English subtitles as the sales sheet stated to be honest.

I've put it on to check it out and the print looks like a fifth generation vhs rip.

I've watched the first 20 minutes so far and am going to watch the rest in a bit, i've never seen the film before so i can't comment on what version is actually on the disc footage wise but it clocks in at 1:27.32

Mya version is missing the sequence where the women defy the Devil, so it's cut and may not make as much sense.

Another, even stranger, scene is when Ian Bannen tries to kiss Anne Heywood down in some basement, and Lucifer breaks through the wall and chases him away. Strange because if you take a good look, you'll see that there are obvious body-doubles used for portions of the scene...

At first we see Anne and Ian as they're about to kiss:

But for the shots where we see the wall break down, there are obvious doubles! This is NOT Ian Bannen and I don't think the woman is Anne Heywood either:

So what was the point of this? Was the original wall effect unsatisfying so that it was re-shot at a later time when the original actors were unavailable? Or was the entire scene altered in post-production? Just one of many enigmas surrounding the RING OF DARKNESS...

Actually, I think the actor here is the one originally cast to play Bannen's character and they didn't bother to redo the optical effects.  His image replaces Carlotta's ex-husband in the picture frame:

and then on the picture block Daria is playing with while Carlotta is on the phone:

At least I think its the same person.

The real mystery about this mystery film ends up being how many cuts (versions) it had since the director's cut, somewhere end 1977, and it's Italian premiere in 1979.

Post-production problems may explain those two year gap, like finding more funding to pay the lab, or a long lobbying (and cutting) negotiation with the censors, or the distributors, to avhieve a more politically-correct version.

ANICA, the Italian Association that keeps a dependable database on all films produced and co-produced in Italy, gives us these bare facts:

«Censorship visa of 1979-10-19 for 2500 meters running time (that's 91 minutes, using the online converter from Kodak)
Premiere – 1979-10-29
Production company: Tanit Cinematografica»

I'm appalled to know that a Danish DVD is out announcing a running time of 106 minutes when it is actually 84. Others have explained well the difference to the 87 min version (Belgium Flemish), with the suppression of a crucial scene and possibly something similar happened to the other 4 min missing to the 91 min of the premiere.

91 minutes at 24fps = roughly 87 minutes at PAL 25fps.
