The Grindhouse one features the longer cut in Italian only (doesn't it? I'm sure that's what the Mondo Digital review says) so you're saying you're holding out for the longer hybrid version with English language and English sub for the Italian only bit? I can handle just having the longer cut solely in Italian.

Ulrich Bruckner of Explosive Media has years of experience in home video and is a major authority on Spaghetti westerns. This matters because his releases pay attention to detail that studios, for some reason, can't or won't trouble themselves with. This edition puts a lot of effort into a multi-lingual presentation: German, Italian, English. The German version is the default. The long Italian version is uncut and complete in picture and sound: choose this option and the show plays straight.

Choose German (which was slightly cut) or English (grossly cut) and interesting things begin to happen. It looks as if Columbia accepted an English-dubbed version from Alberto Grimaldi's Italian production company, cut it down to double-bill length, and threw out the audio trims. This Blu-ray plays the entire 110-minute picture, with the surviving English portions synchronized properly. When an Italian-only segment comes up, it may be a whole scene or a just a single dialogue line. For those sections the language reverts to Italian and English subtitles pop up.

The result is the uncut show Spaghetti fans want to see, with an instant lesson in studio digest-version editing techniques. Little pieces were pulled out of dialogue scenes, lines that add depth to the characters. I presume that the American cut also dropped a lot of non-dialogue material, but it's impossible to figure out what those pieces might be. The only odd cut I hear in the tracks is the segue to the last music cue, which seems rather rough. Of course, it's possible that it always was a bit rough, in all versions

To my mind there is simply no point in releasing this half-baked verison having to listen to some rubbish dubbing. I want to hear Lee Van Cleef!

I've found two (similar) frames to compare the two versions:

The Grindhouse releasing has more information on all 4 sides and much better colours. The German version is a tad sharper on the other hand showing more detail (look at the branches at the top of the screen).

Fair play, I can see your point. I'm a seriously low level Spaghetti Western fan so these things never even registered on my radar and will almost likely not affect my enjoyment of the Grindhouse Blu-ray. But I can see where it might bother a lot of fans of this film.

I'd forgotten how good it was, not seen it for maybe 10 years. It's a winner, TOP TIER spaghetti and a hands down all time favourite film of mine from now on. The Blu looks terrific.

Mine arrived from DiabolikDVD yesterday, albeit with a completely crushed case. I'm going to watch it over the Christmas break. This could possibly be my favourite spaghetti western. I love the Leone films, but there is something more original about the storyline in THE BIG GUNDOWN, better pacing and what an ending. I also ordered the German/Swiss Blus of SABATA and DEATH RIDES A HORSE as a little Christmas treat to myself. Never seen either, but am looking forward to a spaghetti western Christmas.
