How does the restored Anchor Bay version compare with the Italian Columbia Two Disc release?

Incidentally I'm in the process of transferring to DVD a laserdisc double bill of the Original AIP theatrical versions of Black Sunday and Black Sabbath - both are quite different and feature different dubbing and Les Baxter music scores. Black Sabbath however features Boris Karloff's real voice.

Quite sought after versions now I'm sure, for curio value alone.

I'm not sure how it compares to the Columbia release, but, to my eyes, it certainly looks better than the previous Image DVD.

Aside from that, I don't know, sorry for being off-topic!

Anybody seen the German Mask of Satan DVD (Die Stunde wenn Dracula kommt)? The guy at e-m-s tells me it's the best version worldwide.

Without an interview or commentary with Babs, I refuse to triple dip on this.

personally I don't consider a move from DVD to Blu Ray double dipping. It's a significant upgrade of a film (in most cases). If it was just another DVD I'd probably feel the same but I have a feeling that the B & W visuals will look beautiful.

  • Aarrgghh!

I usually couldn't care less for commentaries and interviews tbh. Money's a bit tight at the moment though so I'm not going to pick it up straight away.

There's a review of Satan / Lisa / Hatchet over at DVD Beaver, the discs are Region A and from the screen grabs don't look overly impressive to me.

Looks alright to me, what do you think doesn't look too impressive?

Black Sunday looks pretty good, I think, as does Hatchet for a Honeymoon. Lisa and the Devil, on the other hand, is rather disappointing. The Anchor Bay release looks to have more definition.  Besides, I don't trust screenshots, particularly DVD Beaver's.

Black Sunday looks ok as does Hatchet I guess, but Lisa looks rather bad almost like a VHS tape. I think it's a shame these are Region A and not ABC, I wonder who might release these Bava titles in Europe?

easy solution to that, get a multi region player.

Picture is a big improvment but it's a shame that the original italian track is missing, will pass on these 3 and wait for a better release on blu! :-[

Not talking about Lisa..

I've got Black Sunday on it's way to me, but I'm probably not the best judge of picture quality. After years of watching dodgy VHS knock offs, I'm happy with anything where I can actually make out what is going on  ::)
