Death Smiles On A Murderer (Joe D'Amato 1973)
« on: 11 Jan 2008 - 13:08 »

I already own the Dutch DVD release but it's got a few shortcomings so I'm curious about this US release, a double bill with the cool German horror film Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism. I have to admit that the look of the cover isn't very promising, and since I already own both films on DVD I will await reviews before I double-dip. Anyone own a DVD released by Legend House?

There's a bit of a heavy thread about it over at Maniac's,i'm sticking with my Dutch disc.

Ahhh Bollocks! I was messing around trying edit a post and ended up deleting my two posts in this thread!

To reiterate my first post...

This double feature DVD looks promising. 'Pristine Transfers' are promised, hopefully 16:9. I'l hang on for reviews before I purchase though.

My second post, after reading the thread over at Maniacs...

:-\ More claims of "Public Domain" from US a based DVD company. Be interesting to see how this pans out once the Legend House DVD comes out and the source materials can be assessed.

I won't be bothering with it.My German SE of CASTLE OF THE WALKING DEAD (aka Dr Sadism) on EMS is a lovely transfer and as well as the English track it's also loaded with extras.Great film that comes highly recommended, the 'forest of bodies' was way before its time.

Yes I also have the EMS DVD and I'm pretty fond of it. I was hoping to upgrade the D'Amato film, though. After reading the thread at DVD Maniacs I'm not so sure the Legend House DVD will be worth the trouble. We'll find out in March, I guess.

Yeah the sound on the Dutch DEATH SMILES AT MURDER disc isn't great, even the the trailer sounds better but at least it's a nice transfer.

I picked up the Dutch Euro Shock DVD and it was my first viewing of the movie. Whilst the presentation wasn't exactly great, I could see it was a great movie, easily up there as the best of D'Amato's output.

The short of it is that DEATH SMILES looks like a dupe of the Dutch DVD and TORTURE CHAMBER OF DR. SADISM looks like a non-anamorphic recording of the German disc (with the sidemattes you usually see on anamorphic 1.66:1 transfers) with the title replaced.

Watched this last night (found my bag of DVDs - had left them in the library and got a funny look off the librarian). I was quite suprised by how good this film is. Nice weird and almost surreal atmosphere, good constant music, Kinski on good form, etc. Not entirely sure what it was all about though...

If you enjoyed this you should also try and see Kinski in Sergio Garrone's gothic horrors LE AMANTI DEL MOSTRO and LA MANO CHE NUTRE LA MORTE where he gives a manical standout performance, both films are quite similar in mood and style to D'amato's effort though much better imo.
