(found my bag of DVDs - had left them in the library and got a funny look off the librarian)

Glad to see that all is not lost.

...or your DVDs.  :-X

If you enjoyed this you should also try and see Kinski in Sergio Garrone's gothic horrors LE AMANTI DEL MOSTRO and LA MANO CHE NUTRE LA MORTE where he gives a manical standout performance, both films are quite similar in mood and style to D'amato's effort though much better imo.
I'll seek those out. Love it when Kinski is in nutter mode. His autobiography makes for great reading, but it's hard to get nowadays as it had to be withdrawn for legal reasons (I think). In his book he pretty much just rants and raves about how shit the films are that he stars in, and the guy was a sexual monster. Funny as fuck to read.

It is indeed Kinski Uncut, and it's worth a few bob if you look on Amazon. I sold my copy cos I'm mercenary like that, but I wish I'd hung on to it now.

The documentary My Best Fiend is entertaining, detailing Werner Herzog's love/hate relationship with Kinski. During the filming of Fitzcarraldo the native tribesmen offered to murder Kinski. Herzog declined - best not to murder your main actor, I guess.

Seeing the prices it's getting, I'm chucking mine up on Ebay this weekend.

The scores for those two films and DEATH SMILES ON A MURDERER are all collected on the Digitmovies cd. Haven`t seen the Garrone films yet, though I hope to one day. The two Liberati/Maestosi scores are interesting but not a patch on Pisano`s DEATH SMILES...which has one of the most beautful melodies I`ve ever heard. Love the film as well. I believe the Digitmovies disc may be OOP but it`s probably still available at various places.

I'll have to make an effort to get this if it's not already OOP,love the scores to all 3 of those films.

Btw i'm almost sure Rita Calderoni's sister Stella stars in the 2 Garrone movies, she mentions having a sister with that name in an interview i was reading.

If you can`t find it I can do you a copy Stephen, just let me know.

That`s very interesting about Rita Calderoni`s sister, I`d love to see what she looks like.

I just watched this movie (Dutch DVD) the other night for the first time -  I loved it !  Most any member of the LLL board will enjoy it.  Don't be in a rush .. just sit back and let the movie unfold..  I will definitely watch it again soon !

Sure it doesn't make a lot of sense - it borrows heavily from "Carmilla" - but I think it was more of a calling card film for all involved behind the scenes.  Besides Massacessi showing that he could be a director as well as a cinematographer, co-writer Claudio Bernabei was also the production designer (so a period piece would be the ideal genre to show off what he could do - he later directed a few of D'Amato's Filmirage productions), and the other co-writer Romano Scandariato later wrote EMANUELLE AND THE WHITE SLAVE TRADE for D'Amato and a Silvana Scandariato did costumes for a couple D'Amato productions while production manager Oscar Santaniello also worked on several of D'Amato's late seventies and early eighties pre-Filmirage productions.  I think the film was mounted to show off their talents in other positions and Massacessi likely found several other people who he would end up working with over and over on later films.

the other co-writer Romano Scandariato later wrote EMANUELLE AND THE WHITE SLAVE TRADE for D'Amato
There's an article/interview with Scandariato in an old Nocturno where he talks about DEATH SMILES including the eyeball scene with Ewa Aulin and Kinski and how much of a professional Kinski was during filming,he also mentions his work on ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST,DEVILS WEDDING NIGHT etc and his relationships with the likes of Maurizio Merli,Marino Girolami,Karin Schubert and many more.
