DEEP RED is wonderful, as is TENEBRAE, as Jonny said. I also have a lot of love for BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE.

Slightly apprehensive about TENEBRAE - I'm not sure I could handle the violence (based on what I read on Wikipedia - which I know is not always 100% accurate!) - but will give DEEP RED a go.

Nice to hear the BU print is a good one - the Redemption VHS is not bad but a bit grainy/dark in places. May go on my list for next month if I have enough pennies!
It's bloody for sure, but it's not that violent really.

Thanks, it's useful to get views from people who've seen it. I guess I'm just a bit of a coward sometimes!!

Thing is, with many of the giallo, the blood-letting is part of the aesthetic. If you like one, you should enjoy most, regardless of the amount of clarat on display.

True...and they seem, from what I've read so far, to generally do it with more style and psychological edge than your average thriller.

I watched Fifth Cord right after watching Black Belly of the Tarantula so to me it seemed tame by comparison. Since then i started to enjoy this film for the wide angle camerawork by vittorio storaro and the performance of Franco Nero. Regarding Rosella Falk who played the bedridden murder victim, she seems to lack the eye candy quality of Edwige Fenech and other euro actresses even tho shes the same age. Shes a good actress but lacks the sensual appeal you associate with these women, imo of course. anybody agree?

I completely agree. Nero's acting and Storaro's photography really elevate the film. Far better than many other film of the genre and one of my personal favourites  :-X

Finally watched the last half hour of this last night and was not disappointed. The cinematography is incredibly effective (and often very elegant) and Nero does it again with Andrea Bild - makes you get behind what is essentially a pretty unlikable character and root for him.

In particular, the penultimate sequence in the ex-wife's house with their son built up for me a genuine sense of menace. Yes, you could guess where it was likely to be going when the wee boy was told by his mum to lock all the doors, but it was still scary and I did wonder whether he was going to be the last victim...

Very impressed with The Fifth Cord and I don't think it's my last giallo by a long chalk...  ::)

This was one I had myeyes on for a while. Finally got to see it but was a tincy bit let down. On the whole, I thought it was a pretty good film the startthe genre with and Storaro's talents are ever present. The mid section was rather boring but the Wellesian quality of the fianle was great. Raised the film in my estimation.

Just watched The Fifth Cord

Had you seen it before? I think it's pretty good, liked it a lot more the second time I saw it. Morricone's music and Storaro's photography are both excellent too.

I had seen it once before, way back when Redemption put it out on tape. I must have been stoned or drunk as I couldn't remember any of it. I'm going to sound like a stuck record after just re-reading this thread but the cinematography in this is just wonderful, I seemed to notice quite a lot of spiral staircases - there's a shot of some huge, wide, black and red ones that look amazing, almost like they were created for a large budget James Bond film.

Low on the gore and sleaze but what a treat all the same.
