I was looking at the Greek VHS dub I have on my PC today and noticed that the image is 'squeezed', things that should be circular appear on screen as elipses, car wheels, headlights etc. This suggests to me that the Greek VHS transfer is a scope ratio film telecined to 4:3 with the wrong lens on...

I did some grabs and then in photoshop re-sized them to a 16:9 ratio, not quite scope ratio but you can see the difference...

The first grab is straight off the Greek tape, the second being a re-sized one I did in photoshop. Which do you think looks better?

Re-encode a VHS to DVD-R rip of this into 16:9 and it'll look great on widescreen TV's.

You could always put the TV on the 'wide' setting when watching it.  Save re encoding it.  Though it's a bugger if you aint got a WS set.

Exactly! Instead of re-encoding the whole film just adding a flag so that it automatically went to the 16:9 setting would be the best option. Plus the addition of English subtitles... Anyone understand Greek? Would you care to translate the subs for me?

in my copy the title of the movie is missing... i think also in yours  :(

the movie begins in Stadio Olimpico in Rome, before the works for football championship in 1990... if you note there is a little movement to adjust the camera, but i think this movement was in the telecinema, not in the movie... so I think that probably also something to the right or to the left is missing in the movie, even if this is not a great evidence

Anyone seen this without the sound problem or is it on all copies of the original Greek vhs?

No sound problems on the copy I bought from cinehound  :P

Come Cani Arrabbiati

These are for the copy discussed here with no title.

Well, I guess that answers it then. I emailed Mike about a billion times but never got a response. Anyway, good to know. I'll be interested in looking at my copy and seeing if it does in fact have the sound issue...

I'd wager that the only copy with sound issues is the one Polla got his copy from, the guy who owned it actually rented it out through his VHS hire shop so I'm guessing it had a bit of wear and tear.

Just added the subs and they synched up just fine to my DVD-R, I put the subs in a black box so they cover up the Greek ones and it looks pretty good. Will watch it through tonight, finally I'll be able to understand what's going on.  :P

Yeah, I'm just hoping that the copy I got wasn't aquired from that gentleman before it got handed to me.  :D

So how'd the subbed version turn out?

Great job on the sub's guys :P
Just watched it again this morning and even though i've seen it countless times now it's still IMO a classic of the genre, the English subtitles made it all the more enjoyable as well.
