Danger: Diabolik (Mario Bava, 1968)
« on: 10 Jul 2007 - 12:00 »

This film was something of a revelation to me, first time I saw it on LaserDisc back in 1996. I really had no idea what I was letting myself in for, but found the film really compelling and unlike anything else I had seen at the time. Beautifully shot and enhanced by a terrifically trippy Morricone score and a toe-tapping title tune, DANGER: DIABOLIK is a film that is further proof of exactly how diverse a director Mario Bava was.

Bava was able to work wonders with a miniscule budget.

Danger: Diabolik is great fun and you're right, Comp, it has one of Morricone's most trippy soundtracks - all together, kids...

"Deep deep down..."  ;D

This was the second Mario Bava I ever saw...after Black Sunday. And its become a favourite for myself and a few of my mates...watchin' Mr.Law mincing around in that outfit is severe fun! You should try to check out some of the rip-offs of Diabolik, like 'Avenger X'..Mr.X has a gun that fires his cigarettes so he can scale large buildings...priceless...ciggies would be ruined and hard to light though!

Danger: Diabolik was just released on DVD in the UK with the following language options:

Audio: English, Italian, Spanish
Feature subtitles: English, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish
Commentary subtitles: English, Italian Spanish.

Otherwise it seems to be identical to the previous US DVD.

Can't believe this got a release here, in all honesty. Think this is the first time it has been released in the UK on any format.

Saw a very positive review for this from Kim Newman in last month's Empire mag...general gist of which was 'you won't have seen anything quite like this before'!

I was really surprised that Kim gave it 5 stars: he's still, without a doubt, the best wrtier that magazine has.

Absolutely agree. I love his stuff in Empire and it's a shame he doesn't get more full-length reviews/articles in there (but the Video Dungeon piece is always worth a read!)

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I was wondering: how's the transfer on the R2 dvd compared to the R1 release? I have the R1 dvd, but I've seen the Italian R2 release quite cheap and it has all the extras of the US release and an Italian audio track. I'm tempted to pick up the R2 release, especially if it's an improvement over the R1 dvd.

ld imagien it's very similar, tough the resolution should be slighly better on the R2, as it's PAL. I've got the R1 and am very happy with it.
