I don't know if this has been touched upon, but is there any sort of list/database of people who did the English-language dubbing for Italian films?

The only name and voice I know is Nick Alexander (who dubbed Al Cliver in ZOMBIE FLESHEATERS). Who, for example, is the chap responsible for dubbing Jack Hedley (Lt. Fred Williams) in THE NEW YORK RIPPER? - his voice is nearly always used as the cop investigating giallo murders!

Thanks for the response and link to the Nick Alexander interview - I remember reading it in the Dark Side...must be 10 years ago now (where does the time go?).

Alexander's voice is most distinctive - in fact, so much so that I was a little confused while watching WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO OUR DAUGHTERS (SPOILERS) since he seemed to dub several secondary characters as well as the killer - creating a few red-herrings that were supposedly unintentional! (END SPOILERS).

As a part of the filmmaking process I've always found the idea of post-synchronised dialogue to be a fascinating part of the production process. Has anyone read (now Sir) Christopher Frayling's book on Spaghetti Westerns? Essential reading, for anyone who hasn't.

I think Edward Mannix was the chap I was referring to in my last post. He dubs the voice for both main policemen in DEATH CARRIES A CANE and SEVEN BLOOD-STAINED ORCHIDS, which I watched back-to-back last night.

Yeah, that's Mannix, who I think had a great tough guy voice that made him ideal to dub seasoned police inspectors and the like. He dubbed Bud Spencer in several films and also did a lot of anime. One of my favorites among his dubbing work is his rather brief part doing the voice of the cop who catches Ian McCulloch and Tisa Farrow aboard the boat in ZOMBIE - going "same old story, eh?" Love that part! He also did Robert Kerman in CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST and CANNIBAL FEROX, Sacha Pitoëff in INFERNO, Francisco Rabal in NIGHTMARE CITY, Donal O'Brien in ZOMBI HOLOCAUST, Paul Smith in PIECES, Vic Morrow in THE BRONX WARRIORS etc. He's one of the all-time greats IMO.

And I really enjoyed that Nick Alexander interview! I don't read The Dark Side so I was new to this one. I have, however, read interviews with him in both Jay's Eaten Alive book and also in the Profondo Argento book. All very enjoyable! He seemed like a great guy with plenty of interesting stories, and I'm sad he's no longer with us.

Like you point out, bronxwarriors1990, Alexander often dubs tiny, secondary characters. I guess this was because he was more interested in directing and organizing the dubbing than in doing voices. However, I've really enjoyed the films where he dubbed bigger parts.
In addition to his Al Cliver dubs, I fondly remember him dubbing the following:

Yeah, I think in Italy (and several other countries), big stars had a regular dubber so that they always had the same voice.

However, it usually isn't like that with English dubbing. That's why it's difficult to compile a list of dubbers and whose voices they used to do, because it often seems a bit random who got to dub who. I mean, Michael Forest dubbed Luc Merenda in THE VIOLENT PROFESSIONALS (1973) but later, Merenda was dubbed by Frank von Kuegelgen in SILENT ACTION (1975) and then by Ted Rusoff in THE LAST ROUND (1976) etc.

Milian says who in the bonus features on one of the NoShame discs -- either EMERGENCY SQUAD or ALMOST HUMAN, I think.

Milian's Italian voice was provided by Ferruccio Amendola. He's actually credited for this in the Italian end credits of either ROME ARMED TO THE TEETH or THE CYNIC, THE RAT, THE FIST (I can't remember which one it was).

Amendola also used to dub stars like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Sylvester Stallone and Dustin Hoffman.

As far as I know Milian wrote all his lines for films like ROMA A MANO ARMATA using Roman slang / dialect and Amendola - who I assume was an acor who had an authentic Roman accent - dubbed him in Italian, hence why he was so popular in Roma at the time. A very astute career move indeed!

dont forget these two:

LARRY DOLGIN - did the voice of Vittorio Mezzogiorno on "CAR CRASH", Raymund Harmstorf in INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, the blonde mobster in CANNIBAL FEROX, and Al Cliver in ENDGAME.  I'm sure he's done much more but I just recently identified him.  He almost always did snide or whiney-sounding villain characters... and dubbed his own voice in ROBOT JOX, INCHON, and his early crime movie with Henry Silva.

GREGORY SNEGOFF - he acted as the guy who was shot in the face at the beginning of LAST HUNTER - his voice is in almost every Italian film 1980-1984.  He did Testi's voice in CONTRABAND, Rudy in CANNIBAL FEROX, I think both he AND Frank von Kuegelgen did Danilo Mattei's voice in IRONMASTER, and he did he Gameshow host in ENDGAME.  Really easy to recognize "manly man" sort of voice.

Even the name 'Edward Mannix' sounds like a tough guy name!

Sorry, I realised in one of my previous posts that I asked if anyone had read Christopher Frayling's book on Spaghetti Westerns - and realised I never mentioned why! There's an interesting section in it - I think quoting from an extensive British newspaper article from the 60s - with details on the Italian filmmaking process of the time. One story was of a young, enthusiastic American actor doing a scene in which he bursts into a room and passionately delivers his lines to a seasoned fellow American actor. This actor stood up, faced the young man and started reciting numbers!

I picked up Mark Damon's autobiography sometime ago, that might have some entertaining stories of his Italian acting days.

Gregory Snegoff has had a fair amount of on-screen roles - one of his more sizeable roles being that of Godan, the guy with the glowing green eyes in the godawful post-apocalypse remake of SHE.
According to the Nick Alexander interview in Profondo Argento, Snegoff also dubbed Stefano Dionisi in SLEEPLESS, btw. Too bad about the overall quality on that dub...
