Excellent short TV film from Bava and son. Sadly poorly represented on any home video format and currently - as far as I know - the only English language option is the average quality English subtitled version from Video Search of Miami.

I managed to get a nice looking print recorded from Italian TV a few years back and just recently thought about adding subtitles but I can't seem to rip the subs from the hardcoded VSoM print.

Anyone have a sub file or can help me get the subs off the VSoM print?

Grabs from the Italian TV version...

VSoM version...

Keep us posted Jonny.  I saw this years ago -- rented the VSoM version -- and after reading Lucas' Bava book I would love to see it again.

Yup, they're my subs - had I known there was a subbed print already I wouldn't have done them, I only found out after the event. They aren't on my site because I haven't updated it for a while - I've got a few other bits and pieces I finished recently as well... Just been v busy with other things to do it.

I am v. curious to know where the vsom copy originates from? Notice there's no RAI logo on the screen at all - as far as I can tell the only other known copies originate from the late night RAI broadcasts. Anyone else know where they got it from?

Mighty fine copy you have there Jonny, I've got a new copy coming to me in the post - if it turns out worse than the one I have, I might ask for a copy if that's okay?

To be honest, I can't say I actually enjoyed this short film so much - something tells me it was more Lamberto than Mario? Very slow and plodding, and aside from a few decent performances (the grooms father in particular) I can't say I was left feeling a great deal for Venus or her ill-fated lover. I'm actually more curious to see the other episodes in this series - does anyone know of their whereabouts?

It's a pretty good adaptation of Merimee's story.  You get the same reaction about the victim in the story.  Like the film, the story is recounted by an outside observer.  Porel is very good here as the protagonist but as it follows the story closely, there is nothing for him to do but observe and connect the dots visually for us.

Thanks so much for these subs....I just got a copy of this one as well and had not watched yet due to lack of an english option.

Does anyone have the srt. file that matches up to the TV rip? I'm transferring a load of DVD-Rs to my hard drive and want to add the subs to my TV copy.

Here's a TV cap more recent than the above TV recording > VHS > dvd-r transfer  :D
complete with the TV promo of the series ("I giochi del diavolo - Storie fantastiche dell'Ottocento" = Devil's games - Fictional stories from the 1800s)

I sent it to Jonny@lovelockandload - I can always upload it to a filehosting site.

Let me know.
