Transsiberian (Brad Anderson, 2008)
« on: 25 Sep 2009 - 08:05 »

A co-production between the UK, Spain, Germany and Lithuania, TRANSSIBERIAN is an immensely enjoyable Hitchcockian thriller set along the eponymous train route (that runs between China and Russia). The film stars Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer as a Christian couple who become embroiled in a plot that involves Eduardo Noriega and Kate Mara's young travellers and a couple of cops played by Ben Kinsley and Thomas Kretschmann and of course, no one is what they seem. Director Anderson, who directed the excellent SESSION 9 and THE MACHINIST, keeps things moving at a brisk pace and there's some rather pretty scenery.

I saw the UK Blu-ray (issued by Icon). PQ is great; really gets the best out of the lavish locations and the DTS sound track is quite active. Definitely one to check out.

I enjoyed this one quite a bit.  Anderson's films are very scary and create a lot of tension and dread, especially Session 9.

Yeah, SESSION 9 is great. Can you believe it went direct-to-video here in the UK? Criminal. TRANSSIBERIAN didn't have a theatrical release here either.

What I like about his films is they work within the confines of what is expected of mainstream cinema but still manage to be fresh and interesting. He's good a creating tension and there's was plenty of it in TRANSSIBERIAN.

Session 9 only played in the second-run theatres in the states and only got a very limited release.  Luckily I got to see it on the big screen and took a friend to see it the next night and liked it just as much as the first time.  Transsiberian didn't get a theatrical release in the states either.  BTW, amazon.com also has the Transsiberian blu-ray for $9.99 US.

It's a crying shame that neither film was afforded a decent release. I think with the right marketing campaign both films had the potential to make a fair bit of money and had they been lavished with that kind of attention would be a lot better known now.

I misspoke, Transsiberian did get released at our local art cine, The Olympia Film Society, but I missed it.  Still it was a very limited release.  The nice thing about Anderson's films, since they're not well known, is turning on a friend or my younger brother to films like that.  :-X  I'm off to bed, it's 2:00 AM and I've got to work tomorrow. Cheers!  :P

Good night, Michael!  :-X

I see Anderson has directed episodes of the American TV show FRINGE, but I know nothing of it. Anyone seen any of it?

I nearly bought TRANSIBERIAN the other day but opted to get REDBELT instead.
