Martyrs (Pascal Laugier, 2008)
« on: 06 Apr 2009 - 09:34 »

The early '70s. A young girl is seen escaping from an industrial complex, running for her life, her body covered in lacerations. Recovering in hospital, the girl befriends another girl of a similar age. The action then cuts to ten years later. The girls find themselves in the middle of another grisly situation, only this time they may not be the victims...

I saw this at the weekend and thought it was superb: really great. Don't want to say too much, as I wouldn't want to spoil it for anyone, but this is truly great film. It's certainly the cinematic equivalent of Marmite: a real love it or hate it affair, but I thought it was intelligent, psychological and mesmerising. A film that I won't ever forget. This is getting some great reviews, BTW: Jamie Graham's gave it five stars in the latest issue of Total Film. Check it out...

I had the chance to see this at the cinema, but decided i'm fed up with this "brutal" "torture" stuff that seems to be doing the rounds, and I didn't go.

It's worth seeing. I just didn't enjoy it. Perhaps I'd heard so much before seeing it that it just couldn't live up to all the hype I'd heard/been fed.

I don't want to ruin it for anybody but I found the whole ending to be rather preposterous and unworthy of such a long and sustained build-up.

I really didn't know what to expect going into it, as I had heard conflicting reports. I was glued throughout and I really liked the ending – I though that it's was really rich and open to interpretation. One of those films that's ripe for debate.

Indeed - it certainly had the Frightfest audience split down the middle last August.

Best horror movie I've seen in a theatre this year.

"Martyrs"- while certainly not universally embraced- will certainly become on of the lasting titles in modern horror. ;)

Very disappointing.
I quite liked "Saint Ange",Laugier's first film, but this one has a messy, rushed, pretentious screenplay, bad acting and terribly repetitive, boring second half.

So, it's quite similar to MOTHER OF TEARS then?

Right! Back on topic - I read on another forum that someone picked up a UK DVD from Sainsbury's for just £7.50, which is a steal for this film.

GP - I didn't like Laugier's first film - it was released here and in America as HOUSE OF VOICES. Frustratingly the film only had the English dub on the DVD and it was pretty awful.

"Martyrs" isn't "a pile of shit",it's just disappointing IMO.
Because of the early rave reviews,i was probably expecting more.

they are very different films Paul :D,you can like "Saint Ange" but not "Martyrs",or vice versa!
It's the "torture porn" part of the film that really left me cold, also the "sect" and the ending...

I picked this up when I was back in the UK last weekend. I have to say that I was a little disappointed by it too. I quite enjoyed the first half, despite the tired Chris Cunningham style make up effects and look of some of the psychological scenes. The second half just found itself to be getting increasingly more and more ridiculous as the running time progressed - and some of the decisions that the heroine made ranged from highly improbable to utter bollocks. Also, I don't think that it is particularly clever or as deeply layered with meaning as some internet reviews may suggest, however, despite my comments I would recommend watching it - and I think it's a film I may appreciate more within time..though I'm not sure how many times I'd want to sit through it. And definitely not one to watch with the missus.
