Goblin to play Birmingham in July
« on: 13 May 2009 - 11:37 »

I am sure most of you know about this already, but there doesn't seem to be a post on it yet... so just in case you don't...

Goblin are headling the Supersonic Festival in Birmingham which runs from the 24th to the 26th of July. It's not yet been announced which day they are playing, but there are a ton of other great bands playing and a weekend ticket (Friday evening and 2 full days of music) costs £75:

I posted some more info about the line-up and a review of a recent gig with this line-up on my blog here.

I'm buying tickets this weekend to see them at the end of the month in Paris.

Do you think it's worth going? I'm a little lost with their current lineup and what they play now.

Here's what I posted about the line-up and a review from someone who saw them in Austria recently:

Quote
The full Goblin lineup is Fabio Pignatelli, Maurizio Guarini, Massimo Morante, Agostino Marangolo and Aidan Zammit. They have already played Austria this month, and here’s a random review I found on the internet about that gig:

"Holy mother, what a fantastic concert!

Goblin are back and they have so much musical energy, it’s incredible. They were really enjoying themselves on stage, set appropriately in an eerie medieval church - a great atmospheric backdrop. Fabio and Agostino created a furious rhythmical foundation. You just gotta love it when Fabio’s significant style of playing switches between delicate and funky and then dives off into plain heavy intensity. My greatest respects also to Agostino - he really pumped it up ("E Suono Rock" was one aggressive beast! God, I loved it!) and brought a lot of versatility to the tracks we have known for so long. Massimo seemed to have a lot of fun and seamlessly blended suspenseful, mellow and fiery riffs. He also did the introductory words for the band’s comeback in German (with a little help Wink) Maurizio and Aidan created the dense and intricate synth soundscapes ranging from dark to upbeat, from downright chilling to quiet and gentle (as in "Aquaman"). Joyous Aidan is a great addition to the lineup, he did several soli and most of the vocal parts. Imagine a "Paura" vocoder duel with Maurizio on "Tenebre"!

We were treated to a great flow of tracks from "Profondo Rosso", "Roller", "Suspiria", "Il Fantastico Viaggio Del Bagarozzo Mark", "Dawn of the Dead", "Tenebre", "Phenomena" and "BTTG". They opened with "Magic Thriller" and closed with an encore from, well, I am not going to spoil the excitement for you by posting a track list. I was so thrilled I probably wouldn’t get it right anyway. I hardly dared to go back home afterwards in the dark, I was scared Laughing Thank you so much for choosing Austria for your stage return, it was an unforgettable evening!

If anyone from Goblin is reading this: Pleeeaase consider a live release or treat us with some video clips of your performance! Austrian television was filming and there was a stage camera (well, at least a sporadic one) so I can only hope this footage will surface eventually."

I've been considering going down to Birmingham for this but can't find any details on how to buy a ticket just for the Goblin show.

Can you only buy full passes or are single show tickets available?

The weekend is well worth going to if you like your doom and experimental music.

They've only just announced the line-ups for each day, and Goblin are playing the Sunday:

Tickets for a single day are £35: http://www.capsule.org.uk/supersonic/2009/page/tickets

That's me knackered then  :-\

I can handle a bit of experimental but a weekend of doom would probably make me want to throw myself off spaghetti junction.

I'd have driven down for just the Goblin show but don't have the time to spend all weekend, or all day, there to be honest.

I've been trying to get some of my students to work at the festival in the vein hope that I could score some free tickets.  The only problem is that I fly to Italy on the Saturday and it is not clear when Goblin will be performing; I presume it will be on the Friday night.

Saw them last night. Good turn out! I ended up going alone and had a spare ticket that i couldn't flog off!

Excellent set, they played a couple i didn't know directly but the 2nd half of the set was incredible. They didn't do an encore nor did they have any CDs/shirts for sale but otherwise I'd rate it as brilliant!

I have some IPhone photos that i'll stick up when i get a moment. Unfortunately i'm feeling < 100% today, drank one too many waiting for the band to come on!!! lol
