Blood and Black Lace book
« on: 18 Sep 2009 - 11:31 »

I remember a few years back i had a great book called Blood and black lace, Italian horror and sex movie guide, loads of full colour pix, film covers and reviews. Are there any other/better books out covering the italian or spanish horror/giallo genre? All recommendations welcome.

thanks

100 European Horror Films is worth a look, not lavishly illustrated but is full of good reviews - though they are full of plot spoilers.

There's an old thread on here that has a few recommendations too that might be worth checking out...

I guess you're talking about film reference books of the kind that contain capsule reviews of a broad range of films. In which case, I'd second Jonny's recommendation of the BFI SCREEN GUIDE book 100 EUROPEAN HORROR FILMS. The BFI SCREEN GUIDE books are mostly pretty good: I recently received the latest volume in the series, 100 FILM NOIRS.

If you enjoyed BLOOD AND BLACK LACE, you may want to check out the first DELIRIUM compendium, although I'd guess it's quite hard to come by nowadays. (There's one listed on Amazon, but it's priced at over fifty quid.) The last few issues of DELIRIUM, covering the years 1980-1982, are also worth the investment - although once again, I would imagine that they would be difficult to get hold of now.

The Italian version of SPAGHETTI NIGHTMARES is also excellent, although the English translation loses a good chunk of the text.

I just bought the Blood and Black Lace book this week.

Been meaning to do it for 10 years! Finally did it since DS are closing their doors.

Yeah, it's been mentioned on Marc's forum. Apparently Allan Bryce has said they're hoping to relaunch the mag in the New Year and give it something of an overhaul.

Wasn't aware of the BFI Screen series.  Just ordered new copies of the European Horror and Film Noir books and nice used copies of the Modern Soundtracks and Anime from amazon.com and amazon sellers, all for $46.76, shipping and tax included.  :-X

Thanks to Jonny and Vito for the heads up.  ::)

BLOOD AND BLACK LACE and SPAGHETTI NIGHTMARES are also excellent.  I've also picked up Mikel J. Koven's LA DOLCE MORTE, but haven't read it yet.

All the books listed by everyone seem good in their own right but is there not a book out there for the giallo/italian horror that lists ALL dvd's available, labels, cuts, countries, directors etc so different versions can be compared and i can look out for unknown films with a reference???  its ok coming on here and asking you guys now and again what this or that film is like/is it uncut etc but to do it everytime i see or read about a new film would be tiring and frustrating for you experts out there! If there is not, then WHY? dont you experts do one? ID BUY IT!!!  :D

If not, is there a website youd recommend?

thanks

If you want to know where to look for comparisons between diferent DVDs then this site is good...

http://www.dvdcompare.net/

There's no 'one stop shop' when it comes to books on the subject though. You'll just have to keep asking questions on forums and doing some research I'm afraid. That's what the rest of us have to do too so you're not alone.

No it's bullshit. Don't buy them.

For any films not currently available on commercial DVD you'd be best off PM'ing a member on here and doing a trade for a copy rather than lining the pockets of some shyster on eBay.

It's amazing some of the films that are claimed as being 'public domain' - I don't even think they're trying it on - I think they're just clueless.

Thats that sorted then!!  i will steer clear, but what about sites like ? these are copies openly sold on what looks like a proffesional site? how do these peole get away with it?

i bought a few unwittingly not realising they are ALL copies. The price should of give it away really.

id much rather have official copies anyway.

Nice to see that they're selling copies of films available legitimately. Perhaps we should scare him like we did ZDD, Jonny?
