Hopefully he doesn't dog all of Franco's "lesser" films like he did in the Fulci book - made that one nearly impossible to read unless you just stare at all the pretty pictures.  Still the main reason I've never picked up the Nightmare USA book.

You really should get it. It's a fantastic book; worth the price just for the chapters on Frederick Friedel, David Durston and Robert A. Endelson.

I got my copy for free.  A friend ordered a copy from amazon.co.uk.  It never showed up, so they sent him another copy.  About 4 months later, the first copy arrived and amazon said the postage would be too expensive to return it, so they told him to keep it.

He gave me the extra copy.

Nightmare USA is maybe the best movie book I've ever read. Or at least tied with Tohill and Tombs' Immoral Tales. This Franco project has shot to the top of my CAN'T WAIT list!

I didn't get that NIGHMARE U.S.A. book for one reason, it would probably end up costing me a fortune seeking some of the films and i'm into enough stuff already.

This sounds awesome! I'll pick this up for sure. I really loved Thrower's Fulci book. Very well-written and engaging stuff.

I have to disagree on this one. Yes, Thrower gave Fulci's later films negative reviews but I wouldn't say that he "dogged" them. He lists very specific and well-argued reasons for not liking the films in question, so I don't see what the problem is. One shouldn't have to love and praise all the films a director has made in order to write a book about him.

I know I'm in the minority on this, and usually am on these forums, but the main problem is that the book is just a bunch of opinions and filler and offers nothing new to the table about any of the films.  I'd rather spend my time watching Conquest, or New Gladiators and actually ENJOYING them!  Like I said, though, the pictures in the book are great, and the only reason I still own it.

I do see your point but, personally, I think the book is far more than just opinions and filler. For example, Thrower divides Fulci's films into periods and outlines the popular film trends at the time and films that may have influenced Fulci - thereby placing the films in a larger context. I wasn't very seasoned in Euro cult at the time, so I really learned quite a lot when I first read this - about different genres and trends, and I got a long list of interesting-sounding films to check out etc.

But I do agree with you in the sense that we don't really learn a whole lot about Fulci himself from the book and that is unfortunate. Still love the book, though.

The guys that put together that Fulci interview doco DVD - Kit Gavin and Mike Baronas, I think - mentioned in some interview that they had been pondering the idea of bringing out a massive hardcover full of the complete, lenghty interviews they did with numerous actors, directors, composers and the like all discussing Fulci.  The title was LUCIO FULCI REMEMBERED and they had a link to a snazzy looking cover with the comment that a 'UK based publisher' had offered to print it whenever they finished the book.  They noted then however that the task of translating all the dozens of interviews from Italian into English had proven too much for them and they'd decided to put the book on 'hiatus', hinting that the hiatus was probably permanent.  This likely would have been a good book to tell us more about Fulci but I dunno if we'll ever see it.
