Last night I saw FIFTH CORD again - only the second time I've seen it, the first was around three years ago, when the Japanese disc came out - it's such a good film and I can't think of any other giallo bar one directed by Argento or Bava that's as stylish or as beautifully shot, with much of it filmed in what was then considered to be modernist backdrops, much of which through wide-angled lenses. Franco Nero has the flawed hero nailed and the character is virtually a blueprint for the one he would play in HITCH-HIKE, several years later.

Finally got hold of a pristine VHS copy of this recently... Redemption/Salvation Films' release from 1998. Not watched it yet (my partner's not too keen on the bloodier end of the thriller spectrum) but will do soon...read a lot of good things about this and keen to see Nero in (if I remember right) his only giallo role...

I can't remember what was cut, though I think FIFTH CORD i excellent - one of the most beautifully directed and photographed Italian genre films I have seen.

I think it was a throat cut, albeit a not very graphic one anyway

Right, sorry... ??? not watched the whole thing yet (just over an hour of it) and on reflection one of the murders did seem to be missing something...

Less bloody than I expected, but as Paul says, a very attractively shot piece that builds the air of suspicion, fear and things generally not being quite right pretty effectively. Nice performance from Nero too, and I was intrigued to see Edmund Purdom playing a decidedly sleazy-looking 'teacher' - last time I saw him in something he was lipsynching to Mario Lanza in "The Student Prince"  :-*

My first, but hopefully not my last giallo...

Might start with 'Deep Red', then...David Hemmings is one of my favourite actors and he seems to have done some good performances in Euro-cult stuff.

You can't go wrong with 'Deep Red', especially if you already dig David Hemmings.

DEEP RED is wonderful, as is TENEBRAE, as Jonny said. I also have a lot of love for BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE.

Excellent - the clean, anamorphic print does the films beautifully-crafted visuals proud and is streets ahead of the Japanese release from a few years before.

Slightly apprehensive about TENEBRAE - I'm not sure I could handle the violence (based on what I read on Wikipedia - which I know is not always 100% accurate!) - but will give DEEP RED a go.

Nice to hear the BU print is a good one - the Redemption VHS is not bad but a bit grainy/dark in places. May go on my list for next month if I have enough pennies!
