Raro has put the blu-ray menu on You Tube - I've never seen such a waxy-looking DNR'd mess. Hoping this is intentional for the menu screen only as I'm struggling to understand now anyone could approve that.

Raro's blu ray releases are horribly hit and miss. "Nightmare city" looks barely any better than the old DVD transfers. "Shoot first die later" looked average as did "The Boss" - Average in that they didn't look much better than the DVD.

Still love the releases they're bringing out, but I dodn't even know if i'll buy a Blu from this company until they up their game :(

i've my eye on several upcoming raro bd releases, but, despite the price drops (and they always eventually drop a long way) i'm holding off until i'm sure of the transfers and the price.

If ordering directly from Raro it's best to wait for one of their buy two, get one free or similar deals.

You have to be careful of Raro's buy 2 get 1 deals. Myself and a couple of others got stung when they did one of these offers a while back. You have to put the name of the free title you want in the comments section on paypal, otherwise they don't acknowledge it. They never stipulated this on their facebook page when the advertised the offer of a free copy of "Madness" we all got our DVD's minus the copy of the free film. When I complained about it, they whinged it would cost them $10 postage to send it to the UK, so I told them to forget about it. Won't order direct from them again, as their customer service is poor imho.

I had a good experience in the States with my last order.  I took advantage of their buy one get one free deal.  As you say, it's important to make a note when you place the order.  My copy of "To Be Twenty" arrived with the disc loose in the package and scratched all to hell.  I sent them a note and they immediately sent out a replacement for no cost and didn't require that I send my damaged copy back to them.

I had a similar experience myself! Picked up their Di Leo Collection Vol 2 collection at a record store (The Sound Garden in Baltimore, MD) and the Shoot First Die Later disc came loose, putting a scratch that made the movie skip after one half. I emailed, skeptical of a replacement, but lo and behold one came in!
Guess their customer service is kind of hit and miss  ;D

i have ordered from them before and had no problems. they even marked down the package to avoid custom charges. thats a good way of inspiring a bit of loyalty.

Just a heads up that the Italian DVD appears to be defective, the ending is missing on the disc (or it skips out at the 88 minute mark)

There are also comments about the colours being a bit off... not sure exactly what that means.

Either way, I suspect the discs will be recalled and repressed.

More info here if you can read Italian:

One wonders if the MYA crew have taken the RARO team hostage and hidden them in a bunker while they assume control of the ship?

On a more positive note, the print itself is meant to be quite impressive, colour issues and missing ending aside.

Got the Italian dvd.
Good news is it's complete...bad news is it's got a part (about 10 min or so) where the English audio is out of sync...anyone else noticed this?

Entertaining film though.  :D

Nothing wrong with that so far I know,I'm talking about the Italian dvd (which had a bad first pressing --> see above). The new pressing of the Italian dvd also seems to have some problems --> see above again.  :D

Finally caught up with the film last night - not overly impressed to be honest, Antonio Sabato seems more one dimensional than usual and the plot barely holds itself together. (I mean, why not just kill each other when they have 100's of chances to do it?) Philippe Leroy seems to be waiting for his next paycheck. I didn't make it to the final reel... but not far off.

I'm disappointed because I'd heard good things about it - I certainly expected something a bit better scripted.

Interesting to note that the English subs dept. seem to be evolving over at the RARO offices. Here we have the English dub transcribed, then someone's gone over them and tidied them up. Not bad, but they're not done by a native speaker and their sense of timing leaves a lot to be desired with lines flicking past in fractions of a second - they obviously didn't check their work at the end, let's put it that way. Still, the print is stunning (imho) and they did at least make an effort with the subs. An impressive (ish) release of a mediocre film. Anyone here like it a lot?

I suppose you watched the US dvd since you had subs?  :D
I thought it was ok...not bad at all for Lenzi's first forray in the genre.
I want to rewatch this though because I think there's more going on (between the characters) than meets the eye on a first watch. Some things that don't make sense on a first watch (like for example why they only shoot the tires of the car at the ambush) might make more sense on a rewatch. There seem to be a lot of "hidden" interactions between characters if you know what I mean.

SPOILERS AHOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

---------------------------------------

I'm not sure there is much going on under the surface (again, another reason why I didn't really like it) I'm not looking for a profound statement, but perhaps a bit more general story development.

It seems to play out like who can hit the other one hardest. First they kill a prostitute, then they attack the prostitutes en-masse, then they pretend to arrest them, etc... And after each attack Antonio Sabato's just relaxing in a restaurant eating a meal. He seems 'slightly worried' he's being fucked over, rather than out for bloodthirsty revenge, imho.

It's nice to see the old myth that the Mafia never wanted to sell drugs - this is in fact, for the most part, completely untrue. They've been peddling drugs since the turn of the last century.

Not terrible, but I think Lenzi's later Eurocrime flicks were solid gold compared to this one.
