The sequel of sorts to the rather infamous L'orribile segreto del Dr. Hichcock (1962) with its necrophiliac themes, Lo Spettro is a much more conventional period horror film which to me at least had a real Tigon feel (possibly those rooms with their high ceilings and white walls). The script provides a very detailed background to the storyline which helps to make the haunting scenes feel genuinely supernatural and quite scary in places.

Unfortunately the only English friendly DVD release is from Retromedia and although with minimal damage has a lot of compression and poor colours. This is certainly one film that would benefit from an HD transfer.

I believe there is an english friendly release from france,however i think they utilised the same print.I have the other cheap american disc that has the beginning scenes in the wrong order

I just watched this film.  Possibly not a top tier Italian gothic, but a strong entry in the genre nevertheless.  There's plenty of spooky setpieces, a spirit invoking seance, wandering through crypts, spectral voices from beyond, ghostly apparitions in the night and all the elements that make for a fine gothic tale.  This movie is screaming out for a quality DVD release.  Also, the English dubbing is a bit canned -- I'd love to hear the original Italian audio track with subtitles.

To follow up with my last post on this film three years ago, my wish was granted by one of our favorite fansubbers last year. I finally got around to re-watching this movie in Italian and it holds up as a very solid period gothic. I'll echo my previous comment that this fine film really deserves a quality upgrade on the home video front.

It was uploaded to CG a couple of years ago. If you don't have access I can probably figure out a way to get you a copy.
