Baby Blood (Alain Robak, 1990)
« on: 30 Jul 2008 - 23:21 »

Anyone else here a fan of this French existential circus-pregnancy gore shocker? Love its mix of Jodorowsky and Roeg elements. News on the forum of the suicide of Benoit Lestang – the film's FX artist – prompted me to post...

Anchor Bay put it out a few years back.

I like it.
Saw it in 1992, on French VHS.

There's also a sequel, LADY BLOOD.
Not on dvd yet I think.
A friend of mine did the sfx of this one.

Yeah, it's a dark corker. I got a Euro DVD with an interview with the director. Pretty nice, if soft picture.

Sad news on Lestang. He was the demon that shagged Cupisti in The Church. I interviewed the director of Martyrs for the next issue of The Dark Side where he talks about Lestang. Very sad news. I'll raise a glass in his honour and memory.

It's out on DVD in the US courtesy of Anchor Bay.

Would make an interesting double feature with "Inside"....though I'd probably need something strong like "Thre Men and a Baby" ( French or US version...wouldn't matter at that point! ;D) to cheer me up again after that! :-* :-\

When I watched it for the first time in the early 90's it was way oo downbeat for my liking, but given the new wave of French hardcore horror, "Baby Blood" is pretty much in sync with those recent fan faves as far as the mood and the grisly effects work are concerned. ::)

Thanks for that. :-\

I'm a bit surprised they stress the moderate use of gore so much in this. It almost sounds like one of these "It's NOT a horror film" articles in Fango during the 90's...but I'm ripe and ready for more French genre fare. ::)

I just got a beautiful German cinema poster for BABY BLOOD. I hadn't actually heard of the film when I bought, just liked the artwork, but will certainly give it a try after reading this post!
