A completely forgotten Euro/American co-produced war film, based on a novel by Sven Hassel - or at least that is what the name above the title would imply, although Nelson Gidding's script is as far from the dark, 'war is hell' novel as it is possible to be (the film even boasts a comic musical number) and aside from basic character design, there is no trace of the novel or any of Hassell's series in this mediocre war film.

On its own merits, a passable distraction but neither as entertaining as the Italian Macaroni Combat films, nor as subversive and interesting as the British/American war films were starting to become in the late 80s. Oliver Reed and David Carradine take high billing but are mere cameos, although the rest of the cast is at least decent.

Inexplicably absent from DVD in the UK or US, I have a copy of the Swedish DVD which has good print and English audio with optional Scandinavian subs. There is a Blu-ray release in Denmark although a review on Amazon suggests this has forced subs.
