Here is a link to an interesting interview with Mastorakis: http://www.fangoria.com/fearful_feature.php?id=813

And a link to his company: http://www.omegapic.com/

Movie stills: http://www.islandofdeath.com/island.htm

Johny's right: ISLAND OF DEATH could be used as a textbook for every new filmmaker intending to make an exploitation film!

  • Leonardo Tanzi is the Don!

And the master touch was having the two leads, boy and girl, turn out to be brother and sister!

I'd have never have thought of that!
Even more disturbing due to the fact that they have been fucking each other through the film! :-*

I was going to mention that but I didn't want to go into the spoilers... but now you mentioned it, it's fucking insane isn't it? That was the crowning glory of how much this film is dear to my heart as one of the most 'exploitational' films I've ever seen.

Like I touched on before... I'd have never thought of that!

I've got the German DVD of this, so thank you for this thread providing some welcome inspiration to revisit this "one-of-a-kind" exploiter. Seriously, can't think of any movie I've ever seen remotely ressembling this particular experience. ;D
The "effects shots", though really ultra-cheap, work perfectly fine for this, the "Kitsch" songs even manage to create a few seconds of serious sentiment and the biggest strength of "Island of Death" on first viewing is that you simply don't have a clue as to HOW FAR this flick is really willing to go, though it only takes a couple of minutes to get the impression that it'll be much further then you dared to imagine ::)

That's right Peter, this film is a perfect example of an extreme and well-made European exploitation film that managed to sell itself around the world. I am pointing this out because all the other Greek (s)exploitation movies of that era were tame compared to this one and never managed to sell abroad- well a few did but NONE of them ever gained a worldwide cult following like ISLAND OF DEATH did.

The new films may be gorier than this but ISLAND OF DEATH is still too extreme for today's standards because it is politically incorrect and totally sleazy with its concepts of incest, bestiality, etc...

I've always thought about checking this movie out, but I just haven't ever gotten around to it.  After reading this thread and seeing how it seems that you all like this film, my interest has been piqued again.  I think I'll have to go and order that German disc now...

If you enjoy offensive movies, this one is for you! And I think the German disc is the way to go.

OK, here are some stills from the erotic thriller TO AGISTRI/THE HOOK starring Bob Behling (star of ISLAND OF DEATH) and Barbara Bouchet!

I am pretty sure Mastorakis had stated that Bob commited suicide many years ago in an interview he did for the Dark Side magazine.... I cannot confirm it though.

More pictures for your viewing pleasure!

Awesome shots of the delectable Barbara, I ain't got a copy of this, I must aquire one! On a sad note, I also heard that Bob Belling commited suicide.

Bob Belling, Jane Ryall and the old bird who gets pissed on are also in THE DEVIL'S MEN (aka LAND OF THE MINOTAUR). It's like an ISLAND OF DEATH reunion.

Brilliant film, only downfall for me was the music although I'll forgive it.

It certainly wouldn't win any awards but I think it sets the director's intended tone and mood just fine. No complaints from me.
