I say get the Spanish DVD (for the best picture quality) and add in the missing scenes from the Japanese VHS.

Absolutely Stephen, I`ve got the Gaslini soundtrack...love it! I`ve got the Midnight dvd-r of the film, from the Japanese tape. I keep meaning to double this film up with MILL OF THE STONE WOMEN one night for a compare and contrast look Ferroni`s different decade gothics. Both are essential viewing in their individual ways.

Has anyone seen this version of the Wurdulak story? Directed by Giorgio Ferroni and I've heard it to be better than Bava's Black Sabbath.

I haven't read the original story so I can't say which is the better adaptation.  I think Bava's WURDALAK segement is a masterpiece but that does not mean NIGHT OF THE DEVILS is in any way inferior.  It suffers from some loose ends but its one of the few Italian-Spanish co-productions that balances the strengths of both together.  Usually such co-productions are either more Italian or more Spanish in atmosphere.

The Swedish VHS is a lovely print too. It has all of the violence and nudity intact and of course it's without the optical fogging that plagues the Japanese VHS.

I haven't watched it in a while but I seem to remember only one instance of fogging in the beginning.

There's two - one is a full frontal and the other occurs when the two masked guys are rubbing their hands over a naked body. Both scenes are in the hallucination/dream sequence near the start of the film.

I would hardly call that a plague of fogging.  While it would be nice to have it uncensored, I still have no idea what most of those images have to do with the rest of the film (some of it looks like make-up effects test footage).

the japan vhs is still of better quality and is framed better showing more pic info on the sides, but the swedish vhs is still a great collectable and features a great print !

Thought I'd bump this thread in light of the Spanish dvd turning up on my doorstep this morning:

Tracking down 'Night of the Devils'...

As mentioned before, the Spanish dvd is cut - quite badly as well, the entire surreal dream sequence (or whatever ya' call it!) at the beginning is completely missing (i.e. all the gore & nudity) - however, what is strange is that the Spanish dvd isn't just cut - it's edited differently just after this sequence - possibly to pad it out and match the running time of the uncut version? I need to look at more closely...

I don't know how to put up screenshot comparison shots but I've taken some with .vlc that you can download here.

http://hotfile.com/dl/50602083/ad7b3ce/nightofthedevils-screens.rar.html

It covers four different versions:

Spanish DVD
Japanese VHS (prob the best of the lot...)
Swedish VHS
Screener VHS

(I've left out the Italian VHS as it's fullscreen - I also assume the Dutch VHS is the same as the Swedish tape?)
