Apart from seeing The Good, The Bad & The Ugly when I was really young, my first real introduction into Italian exploitation was through some of the horror flicks I saw as a teenager. There was something very taboo about the films - many were banned in the UK at the time, others heavily cut. The first film to really strike a chord with he was Suspiria - it was a complete assault on the senses - the use of colour, music and violence really made it stand out from most of the other horror films that I had seen.

I credit Suspiria as being a key film in developing my love and knowledge of cinema - it's brilliant - had I not watched it back then, I probably would never have began to seek out other similar films, nor would I had discover gialli or crime flicks.

Here are some of my favourite Italian horror films:

Suspiria
Inferno
Baron Blood
The Beyond
Black Sunday
Cannibal Apocalypse
Blood For Dracula
Perfume Of The Lady In Black

BLACK SUNDAY was the first I remember seeing. Later came the cut and re-shuffled version of THREE FACES OF FEAR. The ones that had the most impact though, was MAKE THEM DIE SLOWLY. This movie got me into SO MUCH TROUBLE as a kid.

Faves would be--

BLACK SUNDAY
CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST
CANNIBAL FEROX
MILL OF THE STONE WOMEN
HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD
ZOMBIE
PHENOMENA
OPERA

Another new genre for me though i saw and loved SUSPIRIA when on tv a few years ago and i'm hoping Channel 4/Film4 repeat this fairly soon.I'd like to see DEEP RED too.

I've got a very small pile(but others are their way) of Bava horrors and i find BARON BLOOD,BLACK SUNDAY and PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES are all as enjoyable as the old British horrors which i'm heavily into. :-*

Looking forward to catching L'ANTICHRIST quite soon. :D

also nearly added Fulci's The Beyond but decided against it

Just watched De Martino's L'ANTICHRIST which is an admirable variation of THE EXORCIST ,though its shocks are a blatant rip-off of Friedkins movie. But still an instant favourite from the few i've seen. ;)

ANTHROPOPHAGOUS
BUIO OMEGA/BEYOND THE DARKNESS
INFERNO
MANGIATI VIVI/EATEN ALIVE
RATS- A NIGHT OF TERROR

Also love Fulci's early 80s horrors and Marino Girolami's ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST- all these are classics in my book.

Forgot about D'amato's Beyond the Darkness, always liked this. The English langauge trailer is cool as well with the Goblin music and the voice at the start saying-
'Ladies and gentlemen if you are easily frightened then we advise you not to watch this film-on the other hand if you enjoy the violent emotions this film is for you'
Always remember first seeing this trailer at the end of the Dutch tape of Night Train Murders on Best Video years ago.

Haha, trailer sounds really cool Stephen! I love this one because it was the first Italian horror film I ever watched, along with CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST. A fellow collector had sold me a 3-hour VHS of BUIO and Deodato's film and I was just blown away! You can imagine how strong the double shock was ::)

Devils Nightmare (even though this is not only an Italian production)
Beyond the Darkness
Zombi 2
Inferno
Antropophagus
House on the Edge of the Park (horror/drama perhaps?)

Night train murders is also a good one but it has some drama as well.

After seeing Polsellis Delirium endless times, i finally saw his Reincarnation of Isabel. its a freaky twisted exercise in devil worship, vampires and human sacrifice and the nudity was very abundant :-\ the Image dvd has good video but the sound is shitty.im glad it it had the subs available. was  worth a rental.
