The Demon / Il demonio (Brunello Rondi, 1963)
« on: 26 Jun 2009 - 10:09 »

Just watched this gem of a film starring Daliah Lavi as Purif a young woman who, after having her amorous advances rejected by young man in her town (Frank Wolff), resorts to curses and witchcraft to try and win him over. When the townsfolk realise what she is doing everything bad that happens is blamed on her - a little boy dies, bad weather etc. Soon they have her pegged as being possessed by a demon and an exorcism is carried out in the local church...

The DVD out in Italy from Medusa features a very nice 1.66:1, 16:9 enhanced image with Italian audio. The version I watched was a fan subbed version of this DVD, unfortunately the subs are burned in which is a shame as I'd like to buy the Medusa disc and add the subs to it myself as the a/v quality on the fan sub seems a bit compressed - anyone have the subtitle file?

Cool to see where Luca Canali got his avatar from too!  :'(

I was also quite taken aback by a scene during the exorcism where Daliah Lavi arches up from the floor and proceeds to do a 'spider-walk' across the church floor, she also flicks out her tongue and curses at the priest in a disembodied voice. It certainly makes you wonder if William Peter Blatty had seen this film...

This is a terrific film, highly recommended!

Agreed, saw this myself a few months back and really enjoyed it.

I'm a big fan of Rondi who directed some great films like INGRID SULLA STRADA,TECNICA DI UN AMORE and the decamerotic RACCONTI PROIBITI... aka MASTER OF LOVE,he was also one of the writers on the wonderful SCACCO ALLA REGINA.

I have the fansub of this one but I haven't watched it yet.

I like Rondi's Black Emanuelle entry VELUTTO NERO/EMANUELLE IN EGYPT (on disc as BLACK EMMANUELLE/WHITE EMMANUELLE).

I rather liked Rondi's more laid-back Women's Prison (Prigione di donne, 1974).

Stephen do you actually have Scacco Alla Regina? I have been after this elusive title for years. The soundtrack by Piero Piccioni is amazing.

I couldn't agree more. It has a raw, documentary feel at times, and a surprising amount of depth.

I certainly agree with that, it's definitely a film that leaves you thinking for while afterwards...
Did anyone else get the impression that she (Purif) was raped / molested by both the farmer and the guy who first tries to exorcise her? Adding this to her already fragile state of mind seemed to me to be the last thing she needed and rather than being possessed she was actually mentally ill, with her superstitious family and townsfolk actually making her condition worse.
This is one of my favorite films and I'm convinced William Peter Blatty has seen this one...
I was lucky to make a copy when it was broadcasted on Spanish TV in the early 90's and I love this movie and also love movies of Rondi... This is mi favorite of his filmography together with Valerie dentro e fuori which everyone says it's her worst but for me it's one of the best 'cause it's very complicated show on screen the subject of the psychiatric centers and Rondi really makes it successfuly....

Here are some screenshots of my copy to enjoy....

Best

Jose

Wow. This looks very cool indeed. If anyone tries to patch the subs with the available DVD, please let us know how it turns out. I need to see this.

I've only just seen this thread now. ???

Looks like my avatar has been rumbled!  :D I think that sub file that's doing the rounds was auto translated and then tidied up by someone. I've seen the film with the subs and they are fairly accurate, though some of the translations seem a bt stiff in places. Wonderful film!
